I tend to prefer the deeper toned saxes, from the list I'd say bari is my favorite.  No love for the subcontrabass saxophone, though? Cry

I hate polls that contain a million options so I had to make some cuts. Mezzo-Soprano didn't make the team either.

True, plus there's always the factor that most people don't believe that the subcontrabass is real until I prove it to them. LOL

I tend to prefer lower frequencies, and I did for a long time with sax also.

I really started to fall in love with the alto sax though. It can be so abrasive and cringe inducing, but at the same time versatile enough to run the gamut of emotions. John Zorn really opened my eyes to it, which diminishes my street cred with real jazz fans, but it's cool because Eric Dolphy rocks the hell out of it too.

I know exists, but I don't think I can name anything with using it really.

Also, the Tubax variation of the subcontrabass is played by Mats Gustafsson and Jarno Stakula and a ton of people I've not heard of.

The alto doesn't have street cred? Anthony Braxton and Ornette Coleman primarily played alto, not to mention Coltrane, Albert Ayler, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Damn jazz nerds. :(

I probably will say alto too, high frequency harshness is the best.

Oh, yeah. Hilariously, he doesn't have much cred even over at I Hate Music. I guess it's too melodic for them.

Alto! Just because of Paul Desmond! (Ian McDonald also helps!)
... although Mel Collins' soprano is also amazing...

John Zorn is one of my all time favorite musicians but his sax gets too strident for me at times....

This is kind of funny. The first thing that popped into my mind was Boots Randolph's Yackety Sax.  I got a copy of that single as a free givewawy as a kid from a radio show called Name It And Claim It when a was young kid living in Virginia.  I'll guess and probably get it wrong.  Was it an Alto?

Love the low tones myself. Though will choose Baritone over bass for reasons unknown.

I've gone for alto, I love sax but don't know anything about them, but I wished I could play one. I think Raf Ravenscroft used alto sax on Baker St? that's why i've gone for alto I might be wrong here.

I took Alto a couple years ago, then quit but I'm sure that if I'd heard Van Der Graff Generator then, then I would'nt have quit.

Ditto that.

And also because the people who played alto sax in high school were douches and the ones playing tenor were pricks. Wink

Years on and I'm still emotionally scarred for life by high school CryCryLOL

it gives this song a really nice tocuh also

it is Tower of Powers sax player, playing soprano sax

I really hate the saxophone in Another Day. It's so cheesy and cliche it's practically smooth jazz.

My answer is swung (no pun intended) by a jazz night i recently went to, in which there was a breakdown into just drums and a baritone sax absolutely burning in a version of Giant Steps. My favourite sax

Word.

I'll give it to the tenor if only for Coltrane and Sanders.

Tenor, because it is Coltrane's main instrument, the main solo horn of his most orgasmic albums.
Soprano gets an honorable mention thanks to My Favorite Things and the Village Vanguard recordings.
But they all can be amazing in the right hands, just as they can be awful (Kenny G anyone?).

Is it me, or the alto saxophone usually sounds very light on record, could never really get into it. I mean, the whole Time Out record wouldn't be the same if it were a tenor, but still, it sounds weird at times for me hearing that very thin sound of the alto.

And yes, the soprano rules when used well. My Favorite Things is just incredible.

Having played alto, baritone, and soprano sax, it's a hard call for me. There's something I love about each of them. Soprano is very difficult to keep in tune, but you can bend the pitch all over the place to make it extremely expressive. On the other side of the spectrum, bari is more difficult to bend pitch but it grooves. I don't know why I've never tried tenor.

Can't tell, but soprano saxophone is one of the most annoying instruments ever if played much out of tune, second only to piccolo. (Still like saxes though, even if they are nothing compared to woodwinds Tongue)
