I do agree it's their best since 6DoIT. Not sure about Scenes, but that's my favorite. Still, ADToE is pretty awesome. "Breaking All Illusions" is such a fine tune. Their best in a long time.

I'm quite happy with it. I like how it is more melodic than their previous 4 albums (Octavarium aside, obviously). My main problem with Train of Though is how its more metal oriented than prog. As someone posted earlier, ADToE is a very good amalgamation of many different Dream Theater styles.

Anyway, as far as being able to hearrrrrrrr Myung, I would say BC&SL is the only allllbum where you literally can't hear him. Sure it's hard sometimes during SC or ToT, but he's there. He IS the msot audible on ADTOE since Octavarium, and maybe Train of Thought, but he hasn't had such prominent parts since at least SDOIT.

Maybe it's just because I have my bass turned way up as a bass player, but Myung's parts in ToT seem to stand out more than they do on any other album as a whole... He has killer lines in every song on the album and a lot of them are what hold the songs together. I am digging the renewed Myung on ADTOE, though, and the fact that he's writing music again means great things for DT; some of their best songs are the ones he's written.

This album exceeded my expectations. It's a definite masterpiece for me. The ballads actually have TRUE emotion. And the instrumental sections, while still show-offy, are better than ever. Definitely one of their best.
The album debuted at no. 8 on the Billboard 200. I'm not familiar with their previous chart history but this seems pretty amazing.
The previous album, Black Clouds and Silver Linings, actually debuted on the Billboard chart at number 6, so this one is two steps down. I was hoping it would go number one! (But then, there's so many Lady Gaga albums for the non prog fans to buy )
Still, 8 is pretty impressive for a progressive metal band.

The Billboard charts mean nothing, as the top spots are usually filled with artists like Lady's Tatas, The Autotune Boys, or whatever country singer is the lastest to show just how much they love being a 'Mercun.
What impresses me more is that a band like Opeth is getting help from NPR.

Yes. SFAM stands out for its awesomeness, 6DOIT stands out for its crappiness (well the first disc, that is)
But ADTOE is not a one-sitting album. It's better to listen to it one song at a time. It can get boring trying to listen to all of it at once. It's not bad, it has great moments, but it's definitely weak compared to their best efforts.

I actually like this better than Scenes but I really don't like SFAM at all. I don't know all the Rudess albums that well besides Scenes, but I've heard them all. This one is my favorite at the moment, definitely better than Black Clouds.
I don't mind the show-off stuff, it's DT for goodness sake, I want some sections that make me go "holy shiz!" and there are some on this album.
The ballads bore the bebuddha out of me. Labrie sounds better than I remember as well, less cheese, more straightforward singing. Maybe it's good he's losing his highs.
Anyway, I'm a fan.

I've listened to it probably a dozen times, mainly want to be very familiar since we will see them next week. At home though I only listen to the vinyl version and I usually get stuck on Side 2 & 3
I think it's a great album, and a welcome return to prog, after the heaviness of the last couple. Breaking All Illusions is their best song for some time.
