Some talk show hosts

Now hooold on, Ferguson right behind Leno for worst?  Ferguson's show may be a dimly-lit hole in the wall but that's what's cool about it, and yes he is a joke in the best way--  Leno is just pure unfunny embarrassing trash.  And Howard Stern is hilarious, always has been.

David Letterman

Besides his greatness, there is also a personal connection there. Kinda the talk show host of my family

But Conan is just the man, hilarious sh*t.  Also got that surreal Letterman touch (but even more out there) and more edgy.

Even before all the controversy I never found that bland and safe Leno any good.

Play a clip of someone saying something, interrupt and respond as if they were being reasonable and you did not know he was about to say something crazy, resume clip, he says something crazy, act surprised even though you wrote the f**king show, make a stupid face and shout something.
Play clips of a bunch of people saying the same thing, end with something incongruous from a movie that is slightly connected thematically or phonetically.
Make fun of your own terrible accent (then why did you do it?)
Make fun of your own terrible joke/say "I got nothing" (then why did you tell it?)
Complain about Fox News.
Mock the appearance of whoever you're talking about, preferably through a jarring transition from the previous subject.

I'm tired of typing this now, and I haven't watched Colbert recently enough that I can pull out a list like that as easily, so I'm done. Except I will note that Stephen spends way too much time eating things on camera, and for some reason the audience always f**king loves it.

Craig Ferguson got my vote, but it was hard to choose between him and Colbert.

OK so you're mixing up using the same format for a joke with actually telling the same joke.  Delivery method and content are two different things.  Johnny Carson doing a monolog every night was not telling the same joke.  The Karnak bit was recurring but also not telling the same joke.
