Back to earth for the Buccos. Pitching is failing them now. No bats to be found.

I didn't watch yesterday's game, but I'm glad to see Brett Cecil pitched a great one during a rough season for him. His first career complete game shutout.
The Hall of Fame ceremony was yesterday, and it was great to see 2 Jays guys get inducted (Robbie Alomar and GM Pat Gillick) as well as Bert Blyleven. I wonder who'll get in next year. Will a known roid user make it?

Didn't they win yesterday? |

I posted prior to the win that the Cards gave to them. I'll take it but it was an ugly win. If Molina was playing I think that the outcome would have been different. |

Looks like our offense is going to have to win this one.

The cubs are baffling. They have some really good bats....Ramirez, Soriano, Byrd, Castro, Barney, Soto, Pena....and yet they are big time losers, that is not a bad line up, it must be there pitching, who can tell me??

I am happy to see the Buccos being part of the Monday night baseball vs. the Braves. I can't remember the last time they were on a national telecast.

Nice to see the pitching come through and win it. McDonald has won his last four starts.

I fell asleep before it was over but I guess the Royals had somewhat of an awesome game in Boston last night. Good to see.

The Buccos got robbed. Lugo was out at the play at the plate. Then again they should have won it in 9 innings.

Terrible call. I doubt the umpire missed it. Something tells me they weren't thrilled about calling another inning. The out would have been a double play too. Sucks for the Pirates a lot, but sucks for Phillies fans too.

Well...if you pause/play the video on ESPN, it certainly looks like McKenry misses the swipe tag. His glove does not seem to stop or break the path as when you actually touch the leg. Its a continuous motion as if nothing hampered his gloves path.
If there is a camera shot from say right field that might show if his glove actually touched Lugo. Although in 99.9999% of the time this play is a no brainer....Lugo is out.
Based on this I think the ump got the call right.

Based on that video it still looks like an umpire wanted to go home.
Royals had a rough night because the starter Duffy only made it 4 innings and the bullpen had been all used up from the night before. They brought in the situation man to pitch the bottom of the eighth. |

This clip from MLB is much better than the ESPN one.....at about 1:49 you get the best view of what looks to be a swipe no tag by McKenry.
The ump was in the best position to make the best call he could. McKenry does not argue too much, I don't think.

Inexperience on McHenry's part. He had the plate blocked. He should have tagged him more aggressively. Everyone was tired at that point., If the Umps didn't want to be there then they should have suspended the game once that inning was over to be picked up today. |

With all of the phantom tags of 2nd base on double plays and the general rule on steals that when the ball beats the runner, the runner is assumed out, it is a shame that the Umpire made the call the way that he did but I guess that is how he saw it. Quite the shame that an epic game had to end that way.

Well to me the 2nd base arguement is such that the ump has to watch the SS foot hit the bag, and listen for the ball to hit the glove, supposedly at the same time. If he hears/sees that runner out, on a DP situation. I would think on a steal, the missed calls are very few, % of a %. What looks to be an easy tag, on replay the runner actually slid under the tag or the tag was applied high up where you see the feet hit the bag first.
To me it was an epic mistake by McKenry to not apply the tag on a sliding runner, there was no collision to chance the ball popping loose.
Epic way for a game to end for sure.

Seattle is beating the Yankees 7 to 1 late in the game. Will they be able to hold on?
Angels beat the Indians 3 to 1, with Santana throwing a no-hitter.
Tigers are stranding runners left and right and gave up a 2-run homer to a kid making his season debut today who had no home runs in his previous 200 Major League at bats. Hopefully they get something going soon.
