Yeah, the Buccos (I still have my money on Luckos, at this point, by the way) could use an expensive .200 batting average in their lineup.  If the Pirates bring in a name player I will be shocked and, actually, think it would be yet another bad decision.  Who are the best names out there?  Pence? He's a money disaster in a couple years.  Beltran? Pfffft, old and injury prone.

They have a shot to make the playoffs. Making the playoffs would generate huge revenue for them It's worth the risk. Pena's triple slash is .227/.341/.458. Umm who wouldn't take that OBP and SLG? Who cares what the BA is? Plus his BABIP is below his career norm and we could expect regression. More importantly, they have absolutely nothing coming from Overbay.

I have very mixed emotions on this deal.  Brandon Inge is a long-term Tiger, who I had hoped would get to continue and finish his career here in Detroit.  (Still possible if he clears waivers and finds his swing down in Toledo).  That being said, I agree that he has been absolutely horrible this year and it was way past time to make a move.  I suppose improvement by subtraction is a good description, however, I am extremely disappointed that the best that they could do is get a throwaway 3rd baseman whose career stats really aren't much better than Inge's career stats, who is apparently suspect in the field, and couldn't start on the perpetual last place K.C. Royals. (Sorry Truthy).  Yes, I understand the whole Moustakas deal and that is why he isn't starting any more, but it isn't as though Betemit's stats were earth shattering or anything.  The pipe dream would have been to trade for someone like Aramis Ramirez, who will probably end up going to the Twins or Indians as they go zipping by us.  I am sad to see Inge go but it did need to happen; I just wish that the replacement was worth it.  I guess that will remain to be seen, but I don't expect much from Betemit.  Best scenario is for Inge to go to Toledo and work with the AAA hitting coach down there and fix his swing.  Lloyd McClendon has proven time and time again that is pretty useless up here as our hitting coach.  I'm hopeful that Brandon will get things figured out and be able to come back in September and help down the stretch, if we are fortunate enough to survive that long.  Now, Ryan Raburn, on the other hand is a different story.  That guy needs to be jettisoned as soon as possible.

There's kind of a dearth of 3B talent in the league right now. They didn't have much of a choice.

Don Kelly has been serviceable as a replacement at 3rd base, but wasn't really the answer.

The Tigers have Danny Worth, who can play 3rd base, who batted .300 in limited at-bats earlier in the year.  Again, probably not the answer, but probably as good a choice as Betemit.

They have Will Rhymes playing 2nd base at AAA.  He was pretty good in the Majors last year, but pretty bad back in April, but apparently played well enough to make the AAA All-Star team this year.  They could bring him up and move Guillen back to 3rd base.  Probably not the best solution with his legs, and he was pretty so-so as a 3rd baseman when they experimented with it a couple of years ago.

They could possibly trade for a shortstop who they could move to 3rd base, or move Peralta over to 3rd base, where he was playing for the Indians before we traded for him last year.  He is hitting so well this year, they are probably afraid that moving him to 3rd base would make him unhappy, and negatively effect his hitting.

Miguel Cabrera was originally a 3rd baseman at Florida, and when the Tigers traded for him they initially planned on having him play 3rd base.  They could trade for a slugging 1st baseman and move Cabrera back to 3rd base.  Who knows if he can still play 3rd or not, and apparently he wasn't a very good fielder as a 3rd baseman.

There was a rumor that the Tigers might trade for former Tiger Omar Infante to play 3rd base.  I kind of liked that rumor.  He was a decent player for the Tigers while he was here, and he made the All-Star team with the Braves last year.  I'm not sure how he is doing with the Marlins this year, but I think that he would have been a better addition than Betemit.

Of course, all of the above are GM moves that I might make from my armchair, but who knows which ones were considered and rejected or just not possible to make.

Omar is hitting .253 with 1 homer and 27 RBIs with a .298 OBP, so not really much of an improvement over Inge other than batting average.

Maybe they could have traded Inge to the White Sox for Adam Dunn. LOL

Now for my naive question.  How does the waiver rule work?  If another team decides to claim Inge off of waivers does that mean that they have to pick up his two-year contract and pay him, or would the Tigers still have to pay his contract?  Or if another team does claiming him off of waivers does that mean that they have a certain number of days to work out a trade with the Tigers or the Tigers would have to remove him from waivers?

As I recall, come August, teams usually waive a number of guys as a procedure to get them through the process of waivers so that if a trade opportunity does arise they can trade them and if one of their competitors tries to claim them to stop a trade they can pull them back off of waivers.

Edit: Good ol' Wikipedia:

Waivers

Any player under contract may be placed on waivers ("waived") at any time. After MLB's July 31 trade deadline and through to the end of the season, however, a team must place a player on waivers if that player is to be eligible to be traded.

If a player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, the team with the weakest record in the player's league gets preference. If no team in the player's league claims him, the claiming team with the weakest record in the other league gets preference. In the first month of the season, preference is determined using the previous year's standings.

If a team claims a player off waivers and has a viable claim as described above, his current team (the "waiving team") may choose one of the following options:

  • arrange a trade with the claiming team for that player within two business days of the claim; or
  • rescind the request and keep the player on its major league roster, effectively canceling the waiver; or
  • do nothing and allow the claiming team to assume the player's existing contract, pay the waiving team a waiver fee, and place the player on its active major league roster.

If a player is claimed and the waiving team exercises its rescission option, the waiving team may not use the option again for that player in that season. If no team claims a player off waivers after three business days, the player has cleared waivers and may be assigned to a minor league team, traded (to any team), or released outright.

The waiver "wire" is a secret within the personnel of the Major League Baseball clubs; no announcement of a waiver is made until a transaction actually occurs. Many players are often quietly waived during the August "waiver-required" trading period to gauge trade interest in a particular player. Usually, when the player is claimed, the waiving team will rescind the waiver to avoid losing the player unless a trade can be worked out with the claiming team.

If he couldn't field 10ish years ago, he certainly can't do it now. He wasn't a very good 1B from what I remember in Florida even.

I'm a little surprise they didn't go after Headley from the Padres and Ramirez from the Cubs. They seem like the two 3B on the market who would actually be a significant upgrade. Maybe they're not dealing or the asking price is too high. It's hard to just a trade without having a good idea of the exact market conditions.

Ramirez rumors existed but at $15 million this year and $16 million next year I think that his contract was too rich for the Tigers to make the move.  I'm not sure if anything was discussed regarding Headley, or maybe Mark Reynolds from Baltimore.

I'm sure they would have expected the Cubs to take on some of that salary. It could have been what held up the deal (if there was talk).

Apparently, Ramirez says that he won't waive his no-trade clause.

That would explain it. I would do just about anything to get off of the Cubs roster to be honest with you.

Apparently he doesn't want to be traded because his family is up from the Dominican Republic and staying with him.  The article I read said that his family is going back to the Domincan in August and that he might be open to a trade after that.

I wonder if there's an unfortunate team we can dump Frank Francisco onto.  You should be relieved if all he does is give up a solo HR in an appearance.

I am of the belief that Carlos Pena's value outside of claustrophobic Wrigley Field is right around $0, which is nowhere near his current $9,959,997.  Overbay is awful as well but they don't need to go throwing money at a marginally better player who is only one year younger and has no future with the team.  What they should do is invest money into finding a young first basemen with potential upside.  For less money they might be able to aquire Chris Davis from the Texas Rangers who is 8 years younger than Pena and could either A) finally show his potential through a change of scenery or B) put up similar numbers to what Carlos Pena would in a non-hitters park (PNC being a pitchers park)

The Pirates aren't competitors next year. They're competitors this year due mostly to luck. I think they should run with it and act like any other team down 1 game would in their position.

I'll take luck, chemistry and timing hitting and pitching if it is going to end the streak. As to next year who knows how the NL central will pan out if Albert jumps ship for more money. I am hoping that the streak ends this year and it is only the beginning of many winning seasons to come.

Those Royals may have a record comparable to the Bad News Bears but man have they had some awesome finishes. This series against the Rays has turned out to be really fun to watch. Thumbs Up
