I'm glad to hear Ricky Romero was named to the all-star team as an injury replacement for Jon Lester.  I don't know if that's enough to get me to watch an All-Star game.  I don't think I've watched one from any sport in at least 5 years, and that may be generous.

I assume, Pat, you'll give me that "he's statistically the worst fielder in the history of baseball" ?

I'd like to actually see this, I've only heard it mentioned.....
Besides f**k the numbers, you don't watch him play every day. He's fine. Not the greatest, not great, but fine.
Doesn't deserve however many golden gloves he has but he's a fine fielder. Get's the job done day in and day out. Maybe he has how many errors and...whatever numbers they found but he gets it done almost all the time. At the very least what else can you ask for?

For the record, the guy gave it to Jeter...he didn't even ask for anything though, I think, the team did pay him for it.

As for Rose making the HoF one day, I really don't see it happening. It may smell a little bit but the all time hits leader...just feels so wrong without him in there.

He has a large sample to draw from on UZR and he's pretty consistently very bad. He's not the worst in history, but he's not good. I don't watch him everyday, but when I do I see somebody with no range at all.

Fine

He's good enough and has been a consistent hitter and clutch player (everyone will go through dry spells of course) so I ain't complaining!
Tying in with Scott, I think it's partially to do with his hype...he is perfectly serviceable, not golden glove material but it's never been a liability.

He's a great player no doubt.

On that note, Yankee nation showed how very insane they can be.
When Jeter got off to a slow start their were mind numbing amounts of calls saying he needs to be dropped in the order, dropped from the starting lineup, even sent down for a while. Moving him off the field.

Of course it went away when he picked up but still, this was maybe a month in!
Fanatics eh?

People do very poorly with statistical reasoning. Combine that with the fact that sports fans are generally overly emotional and sometimes stupid, and boom! you have things like that being said.

The hosts on a Philly talkradio station yesterday were saying that Ryan Howard will have a better career than Mike Schmidt.

Ok...I thought this is one of the better ESPN polls of late......The conversations could be endless on this one, I don't know that I have clear single choice.......What do you all think? Right now I am leaning towards B.

"Which baseball record set since 1941 is the most unbreakable?

A)  Barry Bonds 73 single season HR.
B) Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak.
C) Cal Ripken Jr's 2,632 consecutive games played.
D) Pete Roses' 4,256 career hits
E) Nolan Ryan's 7 career ho hitters.

Nolan Ryan's 7 no hitters. I think all of them will probably be broken eventually.

You don't think Pete Rose's is a tougher one? 4,256 ÷ 20 (seasons) = 213 hits per season...Can anybody do that?
But I do guess any of them could be broken.....

Sure somebody can since Pete already did. If Ichiro had started his career here I think he may have done it.

From Wiki.  Rose was signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent on June 18, 1960, and was assigned to the Geneva Redlegs of the New York-Penn League. He played second base, pushing new teammate Tony Perez to third base.[citation needed] Pete hit only .277 and struggled in the field. However, the Geneva fans appreciated his hustling style and voted him Most Popular Player at the end of the season.[citation needed] Pete's manager in Geneva was not very positive about Pete's skills, sending a report back to Cincinnati that said, "Pete Rose can't make a double play, can't throw, can't hit left handed, and can't run."[

Of those, Bonds' record I'd think would be the easiest on to break if someone get's hot enough.  The other 4 seem to me to be significantly tougher.

I couldn't imagine anybody playing more than 16 years without being given a rest anymore.  It's probably the record of the above that the least amount of players would actually strive to break.

My thought was similar.  Although Ripken's string of consecutive games played may be the "Easiest" to achieve, in today's game it is the most unlikely to happen.  Hardly any players appear in every game in one season let alone 16 straight.

Amend question to start at 1938 and

F)  Johnny Vander Meer's two consecutive no-hitters

will be the correct answer.
