Just heard 2 more Marillion albumns for the first time today:

.Com and Radiation.

I have the classic albumns, Marbles, Brave, Afraid of Sunlight and a few more H albumns. Also have the 4 Fish albumns too.

I had heard mixed reviews about .Com and Radiation, - totally unfounded as both are superb.

Next up Holidays in Eden

Yes it would seem that it's actually a live recording from some concert in 1986. On some discography type page I found a reference to this "Fish Out of Water" CD and I assumed it was a rarities bootleg and not a live bootleg. Nevertheless I would have loved to have heard their take on it!

On another topic, I have to report that my impression of Hogarth as a live performer has improved considerably after watching the Out of Season DVD. I have never watched any Hogarth era DVDs before, aside from a few short snippets found here and there on the Internet, and those were heavily edited with slow-mo effects and such so I thought he had a prima donna type onstage personality. The Out of Season thing feels much more natural and intimate. And through that I discovered The Release which seems to be what eventually become of Tic-Tac-Toe from the aborted 5th Fish era album, great song! Too bad it didn't make it to the Seasons End proper, it's better than After Me at the very least.

Listening to the Bonus disc from Afraid Of Sunlight. This has some great stuff on it. I actually prefer the Studio Outtake version of Cannibal Surf Babe, it gives the song a more live feel. Also the demo of Beyond You has an even better guitar performance from Rothery.

), and whilst I might have been a tad over enthusiastic, I still think it is a very solid four star album. there are some sublime moments on it.

I'm now starting to get itchy and impatient for some new material, as I guess a lot of people are.

So.....looking forward to the new material, which they are apparently working on now, what are you looking for? A continuation of HITR, or something completely different?

Personally, I would be more than happy if they did what they always do; namely bring something that is fantastically new whilst retaining the best of their traditions.

I drifted away from Marillion at the time of Anoraknophobia; the infamous press-baiting press release at the time put me off, as did the album itself, which seemed caught up in making occasional references to their past whilst at the same time striving to be see as being really modern. I thought that with Brave and Afraid of Sunlight the boys had finally found a new post-Fish identity for themselves, but subsequent releases made me feel unsure as to what they were doing. Sometimes they seemed to be trying to break out and find a new audience, other times they seemed to be catering to their current audience (whilst taking pains to distance themselves from the Fish era), eventually I felt that they were a band who no longer knew who they were and what they were doing.

But then a while back I gave Marbles a listen and I was very favourably impressed. I'm caught up now - aside from Less Is More because I'm not really one for "acoustic" albums from primarily non-acoustic artists, especially when there's no new material on them - and I'd be fascinated to see what they do next. Personally, I hope they go for a single-disc effort rather than sprawling onto a double album again, because I thought HITR could have been much stronger if it had been concentrated down a little and if they'd been a bit more ferocious about their editing. (The 2-disc version of Marbles is different, but that's because the concept helped it hang together.)

The latest Web magazine popped in the letter box Wednesday.

Some good stuff in their, mainly concentrating on the Weekends and a good interview with the former road manager.

At the back, there were pictures, and a written piece, of how Steve H read out the vows at a wedding of a fan recently.

I ask you; just how many band singers, or members for that matter, would do such a thing just by virtue of the fact that the recipient was a fan?

He is. I met him in my old pub in Oswestry when they were recording Radiation. I had had a few at the time, but he was really good to talk to.

Burning Shed are doing a pressing of Marillion.Com - a long overdue one, to say the least, as the album has been

out of print for years.

They're also doing another pressing of a 2 DVD version of Somewhere Else - another great Marillion release which has been out of print/stock for a while now.

What lazland said. I was not keen on Radiation, but I told myself I'd give them "just one more chance." Then I disliked Marillion.com and was more or less ready to give up. Then they did the big PR push for Anoraknophobia and I thought "Ah, hell, I'll give them a shot", feeling that they deserved it considering all the enjoyment I'd had out of the first nine studio albums.

Well, I disliked that album enough that I decided to cut my losses and stop listening to new Marillion releases! By that point I'd been disappointed three times in a row and saw little to no hope of the guys ever regaining my confidence, the band having firmly drifted away from playing the sort of material I liked. So I walked away and stopped paying attention for some time.

Big mistake! When I finally got around to listening to the 2CD version of Marbles I was very pleasantly surprised - I thought it was their best since Brave/Afraid of Sunlight (the two albums I consider to be the peak of Steve Hogarth's tenure as singer). I can't personally recommend Radiation to anyone who isn't a hardcore fan but I would certainly say you should give Marbles a go.
