I second this. Brave has some of the best dynamics I've ever heard on any recording. Really all their albums play with dynamics really well. One of the reasons I keep coming back to this band. (as well as one of the reasons I regret falling alseep to their albums sometimes )

Funny how I should see this thread just now. I just tonight finished listening in order to every Marillion album from Script to Happiness. I have found that with Hogwart era Marillion, you are like the song says "Waiting to Happen" (great song by the way) whereas Fish, it was already there, it was happening continually on the 1st 2 albums and Misplaced Childhood takes the cake, the vocals and keys and guitars were all equally improtant. Hogwart began to whine too much, he came out of it a bit and the earlier Wart era albums were good and his vocals solid, however the guitars faded as did the keys, hardly ever an instrumental section to be heard. Marillion lost there identity (with me) and themselves I feel. P.s. Marbles was a short lived power comeback.
My ratings?
Script 9.8
Misplaced 10
Fugazi 8.7
Clutching 9.6
B sides - 9
Seasons End - 8.6
Holidays in eden - 9.2
Brave - 9.4
Afraid of Sunlight - 9 (WTF Cannibal Surf Babe does not fit!)
This Strange Engine - 9.2
Radiation - 6
.Com - 8.6
Anorak - 8.2
Marbles - 9
Somewhere Else - 7
Happiness - 7.7
That's my opinion anyhow.

Hey Steve, I wish I were there, honest! Tomorrow night, on my weekly pilgrimage to the pub, I will raise a glass to you boys. Have a great time

MW11 Montreal is done and dusted....and I think I need to lie down for about a week. The last evening was the best of the three ( although the others were none too shabby themselves ! ), and everyone in the crowd had the right idea by shouting "both" when h asked us to make a choice ! As a result we got a three hour show, with an obviously un-planned fourth encore. For those there, wasn't it priceless seeing Ian pushing a dust-broom around the stage ?
Hats off to Lucy and all those involved in making it all happen, and ten-thousand kudos to Steve, Mark, Ian, Pete, and h for writing and playing some of the best music imaginable. ( And being swell guys to boot ! )

I'm completely spent and my feet are absolutely toast. I just knew I had to be down front for Sunday's show. Got some alright photos, but my buddy Chris got some really good ones. I will say I got an excellent one of h during "The Great Escape".
I'll have to post it, but I went to a pre-show party yesterday and the guy who designed the hockey stick for h was there and I had my photo taken with it. Lucy even came by for a bit. Amazing times. More later. E |

Very well put! I agree with everything you have said. Didn't mention Ian Mosley being vastly superior to the drummer of Script, but that goes without saying. About the only Hogarth era song I really like is "Interior Lulu" from Marillion.com - probably because it sounds like something that should have come from the Fish era...

I've heard a lot of negative things about the Holland shows, to be honest. One person who attended '07 and the one a few weeks ago said they'd think twice about going back. And from what I've been hearing, the band is pretty stoked by the way the crowds have reacted in both '09 and '11. I think the fact we're literally starved for the band has a lot to do with it.

yes eric, starved for the band is a good way to put it and as proof I offer the reception after splintering heart.
I was wanting to take my daughter to go see Rush in June, to give her the experience the that kind of crowd intensity but the general admission tickets are $84, and behind all the reserved seating. those seat can go into the 200s. after being able to get 20 feet away from H by walking in after the warm up act, those prices are a no way.

Just finished Marillion.com. A fantastic album definitely better than Anoraknophobia which was a previous favourite H album. This band has so many masterpieces and i've only heard bits of it so far. Marillion.com shall definitely get plenty more listens from me.

Interior Lulu and Built In b*****d Radar are excellent tracks. It's a good album, but one I listen to rarely, to be honest.

For atmosphere it has only been topped by Marbles and maybe Brave so far. Those last 2 tracks were really great.

You know, say what you want about Anoraknophobia, but the songs just translate beautifully live. Besides "Man Of A Thousand Faces" on Friday and the last hour or so of Sunday, "Quartz" was the other highlight. And "If My Heart Were A Ball" from the '09 convention just scorched it.
