Shouldn't Dire Straits be included as a Prog-Related band??

They're not Progressive, but they have more prog than a lot of bands that do appear.

I wouldn't oppose Dire Straits in Prog Related, seeing what already in that category and in the Croos-over genre

I do consider all of Love Over Gold as rather proggy (>>> Private Investigations most notably, but most of that album as well) and the second side of Brothers In Arms is definitely a shade of proggyish...
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

And then some.

"Telegraph Road" is a nice long song.  Nice long songs are not necessarily progressive.

I know they're not 100% progressive, but they are more progressive than some bands that do appear in PA, like Black Sabbath.

How about Olivia Newton John. She's from the 70's,
And this is kinda a long song  "Please Don't Keep Me Waiting" - 5:48

Well that's a matter of opinion of course. I would deny it. But a quick search would have shown how many times they have been suggested before. No real need for a new thread I think.

I would not be opposed to their inclusion though. After all...Kate Bush is here......Bjork..and Tori Amos also. No..I see no problem.

I would think if PA should include more acts, would be more interesting to go in a Jazz or Underground/Alternative
direction, as that is what prog. is about, alternative music, anyway thats just an opinion.

What i wanted to say was , the fact that we allready included some debateable acts, should never be the reason to include more, or you got a snowball rolling, ending up with every 70's act beeing prog., same goes for every kind of experimental act.

Without mentioning any other Prog Related act, I think Dire Straits are Prog Related enough.

But it is natural to compare with bands already here...why not?

Because this agument makes no sence at all :

"They're not Progressive, but they have more prog than a lot of bands that do appear."

No..it does make sense. I didn't even make that quote. Or intend or mean anything like it.

How does one judge if a band is "Prog Related" with no knowledge of what is already regarded as "Prog Related"? It MUST come into consideration.

You didnt use the quote, TheLionOfPrague did, he was the one suggesting Dire S.
He also used this one :
I know they're not 100% progressive, but they are more progressive than some bands that do appear in PA, like Black Sabbath.

Those kind of arguments was what i was trying to warn against. As i think the band should be included if they deserve so, not because other bands like Black Sabbath is here.
Not to mention that BS is from another time, where prog was in its defination, where DS made those few prog. tracks, after the first period of prog. was long gone, not actualy adding much to prog rock.

Basicly im not after DS, even if i disagree they a basicly even prog related, im just sick with the same story about x band should be included because y band is here.

You may be sick of the x is here y should be argument but my belief is that it is a valid argument. I know many do not agree. However I'm pretty confident Dire Straits will be added. It's just a matter of time.

^ Well this debate has gone on for a few years now. So why doesn't one of you SC's, above including ST, table their inclusion application to Admin for prog related?Confused

That's not really true. There's a reason I visit Prog Archives and not Rate Your Music.

I think this was the thread that had a really good debate about the subject. A good case was made, but they ended up being rejected.
