Actually, I was quite well-formed by that time. But for the most part, it was a dreadful decade, musically speaking. Drum machines, synths and androgynous big-haired t**sers do nothing for me. Power pop, new wave, emo-angst, ludicrous metal -- sorry, but let's not get revisionist here, music was bad.
Except for albums by Peter Gabriel, The Pogues, Paul Simon, U2, REM, Neil Young, The Waterboys, Prince (on occasion) and a few others, the 80s were a veritable musical wasteland. Video killed the radio star, indeed.

OMG New Wave, a genre that.............was actually pretty goddamn good.
Saying the 80s had nothing to offer than those artists is absolutely ludicrous, not everybody f*cking used synths and drum machines, not even close. You should know better.
Judging a whole decade based on MTV is is idiotic. I think your knowledge of music is incredibly limited. Especially if you think The Pogues were standouts.

No, new wave was the whining little sister of punk. But it did make hair product companies a ton of money.
The Pogues sucked? I would suggest that If I Should Fall From Grace With God was perhaps one of the ten best albums of the decade. Rum, Sodomy and the Lash was also a superlative album.
And yes, it's obvious I know nothing about music, according to your stilted tastes. Still, I will maintain the 80s was dreadful, whether you can't wrap your arms around that thought or not.

Because Spongebob Squarepants would never tease his hair, because teasing is bad; therefore, he would never fit in with a Crock of Seagulls, Blondie, Mr. Mister or Duran Duran. Shall we all start singing something vacuous like Gary Numan's "In Cars" to put you in a better mood?

Yes, many good albums came out in the 80s. This doesn't change the fact that it was the worst decade for prog.

Crock of Seagulls? Do you have your 3 year old writing puns for you now?
I don't like Flock of Seagulls or Mr Mister, and those bands are about as new wave as Styx are metal. There are some crappy pop bands in the 80s who took the new wave label but they really weren't new wave at all.
People also confuse new wave with synth pop. Real new wave would be Talking Heads, Blondie, The Cars, B-52s, Elvis Costello, The Romantics, etc. I do think much of the best new wave was in the late 70s. Back then new wave was not even that heavy on synths, some bands didn't use synths at all, it was actually quite guitar dominated. It was just good pop music with a bit of a punk flavour.
As for Duran Duran, they were goddamn awesome.
