Actually, I was quite well-formed by that time. But for the most part, it was a dreadful decade, musically speaking. Drum machines, synths and androgynous big-haired t**sers do nothing for me. Power pop, new wave, emo-angst, ludicrous metal -- sorry, but let's not get revisionist here, music was bad.

Except for albums by Peter Gabriel, The Pogues, Paul Simon, U2, REM, Neil Young, The Waterboys, Prince (on occasion) and a few others, the 80s were a veritable musical wasteland. Video killed the radio star, indeed.

OMG New Wave, a genre that.............was actually pretty goddamn good.

Saying the 80s had nothing to offer than those artists is absolutely ludicrous, not everybody f*cking used synths and drum machines, not even close. You should know better.

Judging a whole decade based on MTV is is idiotic. I think your knowledge of music is incredibly limited. Especially if you think The Pogues were standouts. LOL

Another thing you can't justify is the belief that Daniel Day Lewis is a good actor.

You have clearly suffered some sort of severe head trauma, so I do not feel anger, just pity.

Daniel Day-Lewis is actually a superb actor. I suggest you watch his Oscar-winning perfomance in My Left Foot.

The Pogues f*cking sucked. And seriously. Saying the 80s had nothing to offer than those artists is absolutely ludicrous, not everybody f*cking used synths and drum machines, not even close.

No, new wave was the whining little sister of punk. But it did make hair product companies a ton of money.

The Pogues sucked? I would suggest that If I Should Fall From Grace With God was perhaps one of the ten best albums of the decade. Rum, Sodomy and the Lash was also a superlative album.

And yes, it's obvious I know nothing about music, according to your stilted tastes. Still, I will maintain the 80s was dreadful, whether you can't wrap your arms around that thought or not.

Writing off a whole genre is pretty lame especially when you're talking about one that's more diverse than people realise. I'll take The Cars or Blondie over some crappy Irish bar band any day of the week.

Thats a strange angle to take....well they're better than a crappy Irish bar band...they must be good.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance.

95% of the Billboard top 100 now can be summarized in two words: "supersaw" and "autotune."

Now is the time of plastic.

That is your prerogative. And please, take Blondie...as far away as possible.

I just don't get what's so great about a band whose entire catalog sounds like the Spongebob Squarepants theme.

Because Spongebob Squarepants would never tease his hair, because teasing is bad; therefore, he would never fit in with a Crock of Seagulls, Blondie, Mr. Mister or Duran Duran. Shall we all start singing something vacuous like Gary Numan's "In Cars" to put you in a better mood?

Yes, many good albums came out in the 80s. This doesn't change the fact that it was the worst decade for prog.

Crock of Seagulls? Do you have your 3 year old writing puns for you now?

I don't like Flock of Seagulls or Mr Mister, and those bands are about as new wave as Styx are metal. There are some crappy pop bands in the 80s who took the new wave label but they really weren't new wave at all.

People also confuse new wave with synth pop. Real new wave would be Talking Heads, Blondie, The Cars, B-52s, Elvis Costello, The Romantics, etc. I do think much of the best new wave was in the late 70s. Back then new wave was not even that heavy on synths, some bands didn't use synths at all, it was actually quite guitar dominated. It was just good pop music with a bit of a punk flavour.

As for Duran Duran, they were goddamn awesome.

1980s prog I like:
Hugh Hopper/Alan Gowen - Two Rainbows Daily
Present - Triskaidekaphobie, Le Poison Qui Rend Fou
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Alan Gowen et al. - Before A Word Is Said
BOC - Fire of Unknown Origin
Dün - Eros
Eider Stellaire
King Crimson - Discipline (one of their best for me)
Magma - Retrospektiw I-II, Retrospektiw III
Rush - Moving Pictures
Univers Zero - Ceux du Dehors
Katra Turana - Katra Turana
Zappa - The Perfect Stranger
Yog Sothoth
Eskaton - 4 Visions
NEO Museum
Cardiacs - A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, On Land and In the Sea, Songs for Ships and Irons
Shub-Niggurath - Les Morts Vonte Vite

Maybe not as many great albums as some other decades, but still a pretty good list there if I may say so.

Yes, the same three year-old who controls your musical tastes, obviously.

I'm out of this conversation. When someone says, in all seriousness, that Duran Duran was G.D. awesome, there is nothing further in the way of meaningful discussion.
