Definitely Soundgarden (most proggy and with time sigs) and Alice In Chains. they have strong influence on so many bands that came after them. Btw there was a cover of ''Would?'' from AIC on the Watershed album by Opeth, I guess Mikael is a huge fan of AIC, it was a nice cover. And Nirvana... mm, maybe I can relate them by Kurt Cobain being friend of Dylan Carlson, founder and frontman of Earth, experimental drone/doom metal.

I actually like Nevermind from Nirvana... it's partly responsible (along with Pearl Jam's 10 and Neil Young's Ragged Glory) responsibkle for reigniting my interest in rock music (I'd totally outgrown it then in the very early 90's)
So grunge in general and some of the LA Scene (RHCP and RATM) were much to my liking.... but never in a million year would I ever consider grunge to be even remotely related to prog (we'd call it pronge then right???)
Yes, Soundgarden and alice In Chain can be a tad bit more complex, but I'd prefer early PJ or Nirv any day of the week...

I like most of these bands. Their sound NOT being close to prog is what I go to them for. If I want some prog, I'l hear some prog. If I hear grunge, I want some grunge.

Almost nothing musical comes from grunge.
Also hair metal has some of the best guitar solo's so don't hate.

Voted for Alice in chains - "Dirt" hasmanygreat songsas "Them Bones", "Rooster", "Down in a hole", "Sickman" and "Angry Chair", the debut "Facelift" is great too Pearl jam - "Ten" its a gem Soungarden - "Badmotorfinger2 and "Superunknow" are really great
If
you like both genres (grunge and progresive) I recommend the album
"Common Daze" by the norwegian group Ravana, if you want more

Thread got revived I see. Im quite surprised by the number of grunge "enthusiasts" on this site. Although i did expect more than a single vote for Temple of the dog.
Oh well, I guess Chris Cornell thinks he's better of playing RnB and Pop rather than grunge.

You know that Cornell and the gyus in SG have found their way back togerther
, so Soundgarden is out rolling, he have even a neck long hair and plays the EL-guitar like he have never done anything else

And please, Stone Temple Pilots are not wannabees/posers/clones or whatever you wanna call them. They didn't even have anything to do with grunge. They are just a great rock band who happened to make it big at the same time that bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana did. That does not make them Pearl Jam or Nirvana clones.
Listen to "Where the River Goes" from the "Core" album, and then tell me that they're no good!
To me, that song is like the "Kashmir" or "Stargazer" of the 90's!
Mother Love Bone gets my vote, although Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger" is an amazing record. I think Mother Love Bone is more progressive, because their lyrics/music are just so escapist and whimsical compared to anything else going on in the late 80's/early 90's, and they seemed to stretch the boundaries of rock more than a lot of the grunge-rockers listed in the poll. "Apple" remains one of the most enigmatic and wonderful albums I have ever heard.
Glad to see that grunge is getting some love on this site; some of my favorite albums are by 90's rock musicians.
