Subject: The prog "Grunge"?
Date Posted: August 02 2010 at 16:12
This Thread was made to test a theory of mine ( and to win a bet with my friend ). I have noticed that a fair amount prog-lovers have a certain liking for one or two grunge bands.
Now some of the Grunge bands, which have been mentioned above, have been influenced mostly by Punk and Metal but also, to a lesser extent, by progressive rock, whether the bands know it or not.
Even though some bands are just loud and obnoxious (Sorry Nirvana fans) Kurt Cobain listed "Red" by King Crimson as a major influence.
Now to the theory of mine. I want to see which is the favorite Grunge band of my fellow prog enthusiasts.
If my theory is correct that certain band will get the most votes by far.
Hope you guys like even though it's not really prog-related. I will post that certain bands name when enough votes come in.

^I don't know them all, but I think I know which band is the one you're thinking of, it's Soundgarden, right?
Anyway, my favorite is not them, for me it has to be Eddie Vedder & Co.

There's a section called "General Polls" for things like this. Just so you know for next time.
Alice in Chains is the best grunge band without a shadow of a doubt. Soundgarden and PJ are tied for second. Then Nirvana.

Not quite but it was a good guess
And yes Pearl Jam happens to be my favorite "grunge" band although they're not really grunge.

That's not in the options.
Grunge, for me, was a great revival of 70's hard rock with 80's metal influences. A great relief from weak metal genres like Power Metal and Glam Metal, and it's good to know that these were popular unlike other 90's stuff that was complete crap.
Though I know you just are an unshamed post-eighties-phobic.

I can't agree with Walter that music is "dead" (I like plenty of other newer music), but I don't seem to like any grunge. I find it painful. (I think radio music went way downhill when it came along.)
To me, "prog grunge" would seem to be oxymoronic. (Even the words would seem to be at odds.)
But carry on! I only post this by way of representing one -- perhaps mainly older -- prog fan perspective on grunge.

I wanted to put Tool as an option but my friend said ( translated from serbian): "No Dude you can't put them on the poll! They're alternrock and you know it"
I granted him that wish because he was going to lose anyway. Details of the bet later on.

Soundgarden is the proggiest/most psychedelic from the list, AIC - the heaviest, Nirvana - the greatest... PJ - a nice rocking band, never uderstood the "grunge" label though, probably it was invented for wannabies such as Stone Temple Pilots... and No, the so called grunge did not kill music, it saved it from the awful hair metal so it was one of the most progressive things to happen in the early 90s :)

These bands had nothing in common with prog. Why some peoples confuse this fact, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple PIlots , Alice in Chain prog????, no way. They are pure grunge, and better remain this way. Anyway I like Alice in Chains, they are by far the best band from this genre.

I always saw Soundgarden as the most Prog grunge band having some prog-ish songs. My Friend always said otherwise looks like I proved him wrong .
Anyway I wanted to tell you guys about the bet which I sadly lost a couple of minutes ago. I said the more melodic grunge bands, who survived after the Grunge craze died, would get the most votes, but I could only choose one band and it had to get 40% of all votes.
Two bands came to mind Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
I thought about which band I should choose for the bet ( while listening to "Ten" and "Superunknown" respectively) and foolishly chose Pearl Jam.
If I had chosen Soundgarden I would have won but you can't win 'em all I guess.
Now I have to buy that b*****d drinks for 2 weeks.
On the bright side my theory was correct , in a way. Grunge bands that diversify are the favorable ones.
Thanks Guys for voting it means a lot to us Grunge kids.
Oh and keep voting maybe I can still avoid buying 4 gallons of drinks in the following 2 weeks!

Alice in Chains. They are grunge, but have flashes of heavy-prog on songs like, "I Stay Away" and "No Excuses."

The heaviest psychedelic purge coming from Seattle was the short-lived projetc Temple of the Dog. Soundgarden + Pearl Jam / Mother Love Bone = TotD.
After all, one of their song lasted 11 minutes - they had it hard and long overcoming the grief over the death of Andrew Wood.

I picked Soundgarden. Green River and Mudhoney are the roots......Nirvana should not even be considered grunge, they were pop music loved by MTV and FM radio......Cobain is a doosh.
Alice In Chains, hard metal......Pearl Jam like em a lot...but I struggle calling them hardcore grunge...pop rock music probably in my book.

Well, the right question should be: "Is there such a thing as "grunge rock"?" I vaguely remember some interviews by Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and many others saying: "No". Some even add: "that's bullsh*t from a bunch of a****le musical journalists who don't know f**king sh*t about rock".
More or less.
After all, I also remember some critics adding L7 or Sonic Youth to the Grunge train...

To me they are a Sludge Metal band. But you know, they come from Seattle and reached their peak of popularity in the 90's, so, as many other Seattle bands they were labelled grunge. Plus, they were a big influence for some Grunge bands sound (for example, Nirvana's debut Bleach).

Ermmm. Grunge is a genres made by a bunch of playboys that wanted to be punk. But they didn't know nothing about anarchy and rebelion, so they just play punk's easy riffs with sort of melancholy (just to make something "new"). In the end, they are still a bunch of playboys

Queensryche are from Seattle ergo they are grunge eh NO.
my favouritte are Soundgarden, the most obscure of the big four and most experimental and most technical and complex and were also one of the founders of grunge (together with Green River, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone) they also in the meantime lead down the foundation for Stooner metal (which were made into a genere by Kyuss) they are also said to be the first Alternative metal band.
Badmotorfinger and Superunkown are both technical onslought of fearouchious metal with a punky attitude and psychadelic undertones.

lol @ the guy who started this whole Tool is grunge thing. Opiate and Undertow can simply be considered hard rock or heavy metal. There's also an apparent sludge influence on those two records.
My vote goes to AiC. I know they were dissatisfied with being labeled as grudge, and forced to wear flannel by the record company. It's true that the music is very much hard rock or heavy metal, but I still consider them in essence a grudge band especially as far as vocals and lyrics go.

Bah, this whole "grunge" thing was nothing but a forgery made by musical "journalists", some of them being easily fooled by Megan Jasper when it came to the subject of the "grunge lexicon". I hear more differences than common points between Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney and Nirvana.
About the Melvins, I always had the feeling that they took a few years before turning somewhat experimental, no? After all, has anyone ever heard the demos of Cobain and Novoselic when they rehearsed under the moniker of "Fecal Matter"?
(BTW, Heart is also from Seattle, just like Hendrix, Queensr˙che, the SOnics and the extraordinary tech-thrash-metal band Forced Entry).

Definitely Soundgarden (most proggy and with time sigs) and Alice In Chains. they have strong influence on so many bands that came after them. I actually like Nevermind from Nirvana... it's partly responsible (along with Pearl Jam's 10 and Neil Young's Ragged Glory) responsibkle for reigniting my interest in rock music (I'd totally outgrown it then in the very early 90's)
So grunge in general and some of the LA Scene (RHCP and RATM) were much to my liking.... but never in a million year would I ever consider grunge to be even remotely related to prog (we'd call it pronge then right???)
Yes, Soundgarden and alice In Chain can be a tad bit more complex, but I'd prefer early PJ or Nirv any day of the week...

You know that Cornell and the gyus in SG have found their way back togerther
, so Soundgarden is out rolling, he have even a neck long hair and plays the EL-guitar like he have never done anything else

Wow I didn't know this, smart move considering the current state of Cornell's solo career.

I really like all of these bands, more or less (Have not yet heard Love Battery, though), but SOUNDGARDEN will always be my favorite!

And please, Stone Temple Pilots are not wannabees/posers/clones or whatever you wanna call them. They didn't even have anything to do with grunge. They are just a great rock band who happened to make it big at the same time that bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana did. That does not make them Pearl Jam or Nirvana clones.
Listen to "Where the River Goes" from the "Core" album, and then tell me that they're no good!
To me, that song is like the "Kashmir" or "Stargazer" of the 90's!

Mother Love Bone gets my vote, although Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger" is an amazing record. I think Mother Love Bone is more progressive, because their lyrics/music are just so escapist and whimsical compared to anything else going on in the late 80's/early 90's, and they seemed to stretch the boundaries of rock more than a lot of the grunge-rockers listed in the poll. "Apple" remains one of the most enigmatic and wonderful albums I have ever heard.
Glad to see that grunge is getting some love on this site; some of my favorite albums are by 90's rock musicians.

Stone Temple Pilots are a great band in my book . Although you have to say "plush" is a grunge song, at least to my ears. "Core" as a whole is more grunge than all of their later albums.

I wouldn't call "plush" grunge. The only song on CORE that is kinda grunge to me is "Sex Type Thing".
And yes, mother love bone are amazing! Like a mix of early Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction & Guns n Roses. Am i wrong?

That's how I would sum up Mother Love Bone also. They are a real hidden treasure.

Such a damn shame that Andrew Wood died. They would've made it big time in a year or two!
"Stardog Champion" & "Bone China" are my favorites

I dont know about being progressive, but when it came down to loud distorted guitars, dissonance, an aloof punkish attitude and cryptic lyrics, the pillars grunge was based on, the not mentioned sonic youth was the best of them (hint my screne name). I would say they were pretty progressive in an avant garde noise sort of way.

I went with Soundgarden in this one. They seem the proggiest of all the choices, then I'd say probably Chains. Soundgarden started out with a punk/heavy metal sound, but with parts of Badmotorfinger all the way through to Down On The Upside, major prog elements started to trickle in. Odd time signatures, longer songs, crazy "filler" instrumentals and some songs lacking any type of a typical song structure.

Grunge is the genre that killed music.
I agree with you! I think so many people try to act like grunge killed music, but it was stupid people trying to copy grunge and turn it into pop like Seether, and Nickelback that came later, and tried to make soft music with sh*t lyrics to appeal to poplovers, and in their opinion rock lovers at the same time. That however is not Grunge's fault. I once heard some idiot post on an Iron Maiden video that they saw in an interview Lady Gaga stating Iron Maiden was her favorite band in the whole world, so are we to blame such a good band as Iron Maiden for her? Hell no! Grunge may have some punk influences, but to me it is very much progressive. The whole idea of grunge was to have odd time signatures, and Soundgarden took it even further with experimenting a lot. Chris Cornell is also quite the amazing vocalist!

Have you guys heard of this band, www.shermanburns.bandcamp.com ? Definitely grunge oriented, but with obvious prog influences, they definitely don't have any reservations about showing it. I think the album is name your own price too. Or at least it was...

love Soundgarden and Pearl Jam
STP and Nirvana are also pretty kool
Soundgarden would be the one that heads in the prog direction the most of the lot
but they are a long ways from prog to me

I agree, his death was a huge loss to the Seattle music scene. I was not even in kindergarten when those guys came out with "Apple," but that album resonates with me like few albums ever have. It is definitely one of my desert-island records, and totally essential for any collection as far as I'm concerned.
I love all the songs they wrote, but my favorite would have to be "Stargazer." Just beautiful.

I don't think that Soundgarden are suitable for inclusion, but some of their songs are prog.
Only Cat Butt are pure grunge.

I´m gonna say Nirvana. Kurt was obviously a very imaginative soul, and I think he would have pushed the boundaries, especially when you count in the fact what Dave Grohl has developed into - you´d be facing something completely different, if they had overcome their drug issues and kept playing that is.
Reason to this is perhaps the odd cello usage in Live unplugged, Kurt´s all over the place riffing - yet somehow still sounding in tune, In Utero album - and furthermore those two other guys were into art and whatnot as well.
The other groups mentioned here dwell more in the rock field, and I basically think that Nirvana would have surprised us, if we´d only have had the chance to see them do so.

Agreed about King's X, but I'd replace PJ with Soundgarden. I feel they may be suitable for inclusion to the site someday as "prog-related," if mainly because of Badmotorfinger and Superunknown.
