It was a blast! It felt like proto-Zappa (probably because of the vibraphone). "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue" finally makes sense. Good fun. |

Nope, but this is my second favorite from them. This album digs in deeper to your heart when you think about the American history invested in each song. Some of this sh*t came to life to me when I was on a train and talked to an elderly WWII vet named Joe. |

Hehe, glad you liked it. Yeah, I still need to get into the more avant stuff from Weasels, that's one of Zappa's hardest albums to get into IMO.
Oh, by the way, the vibraphonist is Bobby Hutcherson, a fave of mine. He played with Hancock, organist Larry Young, guitarist Grant Green, McCoy Tyner, and other great jazz musicians.
Also, what else from Free Jazz you're fond of? Edited by The Quiet One - February 23 2011 at 22:23 |

I'm embarrassed to say I haven't looked too deeply into the genre. I have John Zorn's tribute to Ornette Coleman, a Brotzmann/Laswell collaboration and Black Flag's "The Process of Weeding Out" EP. Its all eighties stuff that often gets tagged as "free jazz," yet I have very little of the late 50s/early 60s stuff. |

Oh I see. Well, you could get 'Shape of Jazz to Come' from Ornette to start with.
If you like the Hammond, 'Of Love and Peace' by Larry Young is a free jazz-inspired album, probably a good album to those who are in-between post-bop and free jazz.
Keith Jarrett's 'Expectations' again isn't purely free jazz, but has quite a bit.
Coltrane's most accessible free-jazz period album is probably 'John Coltrane Quartet Plays' which really isn't nothing compared to the huge noise that Ascension or Sun Ship is for me. Or maybe his last album entitled 'Expression' is also the most accessible of his free jazz stuff.
Hancock's composition called 'The Egg' is rather free-ish, from the classic Empyrean Isles, a must-have jazz classic.
If you're fond of Coltrane's early 60 stuff, Archie Shepp (one of the leaders of the free jazz movement) has an album with Coltrane tunes but rearranged in a freer style which is cool: 'Four for Trane'.
I hope that something from that list brings you enjoyment, I'm no free jazz expert nor big fan but like knowing a bit of it.

Speaking of 'Trane, I've owned "My Favorite Things" for nearly three years and I still haven't played it. What vein is that one in compared to, say, "A Love Supreme" (my only other Coltrane record)? |

"My Favorite Things" is one of my favorite Trane albums (no pun intended). It's different from A Love Supreme alright, it's mostly based in the 'modal jazz' type, but it's extremely accessible and one of Trane's finest moments on record IMO. I really have no idea how can someone have a record for three years without having listened to it.
![]() Oh by the way, Pat reminded me, just in case you wondered, all my recommendations are pre-1989. ![]() Edited by The Quiet One - February 23 2011 at 22:52 |

You better not:
That's actually pretty interesting and reminded me of Keith Tippett's Group from the 70s which is pretty free jazz based. Good one Pat.

Ah, then a silly man somewhere failed to enumerate the pre-89 components of this outfit. Oh, you deceitful Padraic, you. Anyhoo, currently spinning: ![]() Which reminds me... I nearly bought some Roland Kirk today. |
