That's why it would be better to de-regulate. That way the consumer can choose the option that will pay him if the fools lose his mail.

Derugulate what exactly?

As far as I know, there isn't any company offering refund in the simple price of the mailing, hence Rob's cry for a solution.

Maybe because there is a big giant public mail service that doesn't offer this type of refund or compensation, the private ones just follow suit knowing there's no need to innovate in that issue.

Anyway, postal service is not really one of my major concerns. USPS, Fedex and UPS work decently enough.

I don't have any actual information on this so I'm just speculating, but that looks rather like a situation where the customer's rights could be inforced either by regulation or, maybe (0,1% probability?) anti monopoly/cartel measures.

^Maybe raising the prices of postal services, thus in the end doing harm to the customer.

UPS will reimburse the shipper for lost or damaged good without the need for insurance on a package. I assume FedEx has an identical policy.

Maybe deregulation by eliminating the USPS and its monopoly on mail delivery.

What monopoly, if there are other companies?

This is the first time I hear about a company including full refunding in the standard mailing cost, kudos to them.

USPS is a great service! Besides, it keeps UPS and FedEX from jacking up the prices of thier services. Not everything needs to be deregulated or defederalized

There are other companies which deliver packages. The only one which is legally allowed to deliver letters is the USPS. They're also the only ones allowed to place their deliveries in mail boxes.

That's nonsense. For one they're cheaper in most areas anyway. Also, the USPS services cost more than the price you pay since it's funded partly by taxes.

So?

Obviously the main purpose of the postal service is easy taxation and its nice of the government to let me piggyback my letters on it. I realize your views, and that you will disagree but I think there are much bigger problems than reforming an inexpensive yet effective government system.

As far as being the only service to use mailboxes it helps prevent mail theft and streamlines the system. You can get symaler boxes for newspapers, if UPS wanted to pay for me to get a mail box for UPS it would be different but private corperations don't have that kind of ability for the most part that the govenment does

Ok?
If they make me a better offer delivering pacages thats fine and perhaps i will use them but I don't see why that means that the USPS should cease to exist.

Ummmm, how not?

They're the only company which provides a particular service. They're the only company allowed by law to provide the service. That is a monopoly by definition.

That means that I shouldn't be taxed to allow you to send your letters at a lower price. I don't care that it exists. I care that it's funded by tax revenue, and that law prevents other companies from providing the same services that they do.

Why would the main purpose of the post office be taxation? Why not just pass a tax? That would allow you to spend the money anywhere.

How does that prevent theft exactly? Me placing a package in your mailbox has nothing to do with theft.

Great logic bro. Perhaps I should just mug you once a week to make my beer cheaper?

How does that prevent theft exactly? Me placing a package in your mailbox has nothing to do with theft.

The postal service exists primarily to distribute government papers, i dont see how thats not clear.

intrinsically it doesnt prevent theft but it allows for easyer discrimination between who should and shouldnt have their hand in your mailbox if you can just visually see if they have a USPS uniform. again, if FedEX wants to pay to build me a mailbox thats cool, but so far they havn't. why should the government allow private corperations to use somthing for a system that they invested in.

You just said it was for taxation. Which is it? Why couldn't the government use a private company to send its mail?

I have a good litmus test for someone being in your mailbox: If he's taking something - bad. If he's giving something - good.

The government didn't build your mailbox. I don't know what you mean by a system it invested in.
