Is there something I'm missing? Cause i've listened to a lot of prog and, sure, Genesis shows the elements of the music I love but it really seems to go nowhere. I think the problem is largely Phil Collins' fault, there's only so much high-hat and no ride I can bear with drumming in prog. Very bland indeed. Secondly, and feel free to offer a different thought on this, I find Gabriel's voice to be almost...cringeworthy. Sorry, but it's really unpleasant to listen to. Furthermore, I think I can safely say that a band that can't keep an 8 minute song interesting should never venture out to the territory of the 20+ minute epic - you all know what song i'm talking about, that really dull one that fails to lift the ground. Mellotrons are great for creating emotion in music, but after hearing Genesis use one it makes me feel the anger like i've just tried mowing my boring lawn with a majestic chair and subsequently failed. Lastly, although unrelated to the Gabriel-era, Genesis facilitated the rise of disco. One can only hope they look back at that with shame.

I can't personally see Genesis as the real deal in prog terms, more art-rock than prog in my book. It's that old argument about what is prog again. Yes, they are a bit inventive, but they're not really a virtuoso-type band, the genre (if we have to draw a line in the first place) isn't clearly defined here. Having said that, Genesis are a fine band, just not sure they're in the centre of anything we should be talking about. On the fringes perhaps.

I think Genesis are fairly overrated here. Of all the prog bands from the 70s I've always felt Gabriel was one of the weaker vocalists. Not a big fan of his voice or some of his lyrics. I find some early Genesis a bit twee and a bit weird. I also feel similar about Crimson during the Wetton era. Not a fan of his voice really or their lack of composition. I find it really strange that Genesis and Crimson always seem to be rated the best 2 prog bands ever. They were fairly good but I rate tull, camel, gentle giant, caravan, eloy, magma, zappa, rush, yes higher

^ I too don't like Gabriel and Wetton's voices very much, and have been a bit surprised so many people really think they are great, but well, everybody has their opinions. I like both bands anyway, the music is great, and I've gotten to "apreciate" or at least accept their voices. (ofcourse, Lake's singing with Crimson is a wholly different story).

Well, less see:

  1. Genesis golden era finished in 1974 when The Lamb was released
  2. The last 100% prog album (that we all agree) was released in 1976 - 1977
  3. Very few of the Progheads here are old enough to have seen them on stage
  4. The production of their first album sucks (Up to Nursery Cryme).
  5. Many people has prejudices against the Pop era
  6. There are no decent videos from the Golden era unlike Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, ELP, Jethro Tull etc.
  7. They were unpopular in their heyday in comparison with all the other major Prog bands (At least in UK because they were N° 1 in Italy)
  8. They have been the main influence for a whole sub-genre
  9. Lately there seems to be a campaign against Gabriel era
But still
  1. They are the most popular Prog band here and in every Prog site that has polls or forums (I visited them all) except in DDD and Scarulfi where only one person does the rankings.
  2. They are recognized by every piece of Prog literature as one of the most respected and influential Prog bands.
  3. Most of the modern Symphonic (and other genres)  bands claim that Genesis was one of the most important influences in their career.
And still, with all the odds against them, they have usually one album in the top of every Prog ranking and at least three more albums in the top 20?

How can they be overrated?

They got the respect they earned and deserve...At least IMO.

No decent footage? There's the footage on Belgium TV in 1972, Shepperton Studios in Italy in 1973, Bataclan, France in 1973 and French TV in 1974.  I'm pretty sure there's more good footage available of Genesis then Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull in their prime.

Oh please, none of them is official, mostly bootlegs and  the quality is terrible.

  1. Yes has Yessongs and Yesyears plus at least 10 DVDS featuring Anderson, Squire, Howe and Wakeman, even one with Moraz and a couple with Bruford
  2. ELP has: Pictures at an Exhibition, Inside ELP, Welcome Back My Friends, Works Orchestral Tour and Beyonfd the Beginning plus many more featuring Emerson, Lake and Palmer
  3. King Crimson has: Eyes Wide Open, Neil Jack and Me, Red, Deja Vroom and Live in Japan
  4. Jethro Tull has: 12 DVD's, at least 5 from their early days, including 20 Years of Jethro Tull, Live at Madison Square Garden, Slipstream and A New Day Yesterday
  5. Pink Floyd has: Pompeii, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, etc
I have them all, for God's sake, there's not even unofficial video of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

Genesis is rated just right. It's Pink Floyd that gets too much love around here. We must have a lot of people who need to be on Prozac here on ProgArchives.

Harsh words.

I don't get the discussion here. I would be surprised if there was such a Genesis hype on Allmusic or Sputnik, but this is a prog site, Genesis are amongst the pioneers of prog, so they can't be overrated here. I'm not a big fan of neither Genesis nor Pink Floyd but they just worked hard for this esteem.

^My point exactly. Pink Floyd are mainstream. I would expect the fanboy worship on those sites but not here.

I like Floyd btw

I like Pink Floyd but not a particular fan.

Despite this fact, you can't affirm that the first and only Prog band that released two albums that have 55 million copies sold.

Dark Side of the Moon not only reached the 35'000,000 mark, but still sells 250,000 more albums per year than any 70's band.

The Wall sold 20'000,000 copies not counting the 2 DVD's (The Movie by Pink Floyd and Live in Berlin by Roger Waters) plus the Live in Berlin album.

Lets not forget:

  1. Wish you were Here....10'000,000
  2. Ummagumma....5'000,000
  3. Animals...4'000,0000 only in USA
The only Prog band that has broken the 200'000,000 copies barrier

Sales are not the equivalent of quality, but if a Prog (nopt commercial) Progressive Rock band (fighting the prejudices against the genre) reaches this levels of sales...I'm sure they deserve recognition.

How can they be overrated?

Iván.

^I recognize them. They are the mainstream rock band with worldwide popularity. That doesn't mean I have to think they're on par with the likes of Genesis.

THANK YOU! I actually mentioned this in the Camel thread; just because Floyd sold (and continues to sell) more albums doesn't objectively mean the music is of better quality.

Not correct, in my opinion I believe they were a Progressive Rock band with worldwide popularity.

It seems that Progheads don't forgive success, bands like Pink Floyd or Kansas, who did outstanding Prog music are criticized by people because they were popular

Apparently nothing makes a Proghead happy:

  1. Genesis had to leave to Italy and Belgium to survive from starvation, and some people say they weren't poular in UK so they are not worth of respect.
  2. Pink Floyd sold a lot of albums without selling themselves, and people say they were too popular in UK (and the world) to be really Prog.
It's a no win game.

^ Success has nothing to do with my opinion of the music of Floyd. However all of your posts reflect an incessant need to prove others wrong so you won't have to worry about progheads disliking you for your popularity.

So what is your definition of the "real deal" in prog terms? Art-rock is progressive...what's wrong with that? And they should be at the center of a lot of discussions here.......There are numerous bands who pay homage to the influence Genesis has had on so many progressive rock artists.
Genesis are deserving of their rating here on the PA........its justified.

^That's sort of what I was getting at minus the last part. Saying people dislike PF solely because of their popularity completely neglects the possibility that they just don't care for the actual music. Sales and public opinion should create no bias for an individual, but more often then not this is the case. I'm not a huge PF fan but I enjoy "Animals" and "Obscured By Clouds", and I certainly would consider a band like Genesis more interesting all around. This is of course, personal opinion and should be treated as such!
