Sorry Ivan, but my turn to have a go at pedant's corner.
No they didn't. What you mean is that you ceased to enjoy them after W & W, which is a totally different thing altogether, given that they proceeded to release a further seven studio albums, plus live and compilations, they clearly didn't "die", but actually resembled something relatively healthy, certainly judged upon sales.
|
In my opinion they died as a creative band to become a boring adult contemporary band.
Surely they didn't died economically (by the contrary), but they died musically (in my opinion of course).
Not pedantic, just honest.

And I respect your opinion, because at least it is based upon musical knowledge & tastes rather than puerile misled hatred of Collins. I do, though, very much disagree with that opinion. I have had years of pleasure listening to the post Hackett material, and I regard some of it as constituting some of the finest progressive rock of all time. As a very quick example, I still, 30 years on, get goosebumps listening to Dukes Travels/End.

We Can't Dance is worth checking out for some good pop songs. In earlier 80's albums I think the sound feels dated, particularly in "Invisible Touch", which has some quality, but it hasn't aged well for me. I also think that the style in the 80's albums kind of falls between prog and pop, making it something of a compromise. Abacab is a good example of that.
So We can't Dance I like because of the pop quality, and nice sound.

1. Duke - Honestly one of my favorites of any era. 2. ATTW3 - It gets slightly better every time. There's always a song I never liked, and suddenly I like it. 3. Invisible Touch - A very slight edge over Abacab. Mainly because it has fewer tracks.

It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen.

Other than the length of the songs I don't hear that much difference between W&W and Trick and ATTWT.

And Then There Were Three (1978) (good tracks: all of them, except Many too Many, Say it's alright Joe and Follow you follow me) |
"Many Too Many" is a gorgeous track. Have another listen
We Can't Dance (1991) (Good tracks: Dreaming while you sleep, Tell Me Why, Living Forever, Hold On My Heart)(worst song: Never a time) |
"Never A Time" is also a lovely little tune. Try again

Many Too Many is one of the best ballads in their catalog.

Okay, another listen of Many Too Many. It starts off pretty nice, but the sound is too drenched in the synth string sound. At the "Oh Mama" part I think it becomes too much, and when it goes up yet a notch at the "I thought I was lucky" -part, it's just too overdramatic and heavy with synth strings.
So it's mostly the arrangement I don't like. A version without synth could sound pretty okay....
"Never a Time" though, is downright awful.

1) Duke - Up there with TOTT and WAW 2) We Can't Dance - This album has been seriously short changed; could it be because it has the word 'Dance' in the album title? 3) Genesis - Love the live version of Home By The Sea

Just recently tried really hard to give it a go, but in the end: There is no good Genesis Record after Gabriel left, and so, there also can't be none after Hackettt left, of course. Slightly off-topic, I know. Forgive me.

I have no problem with Many too Many or Say it’s All Right, Joe. On the other hand, I don’t like Ballad of Big or Scenes from a Night’s Dream very much (both have really stupid lyrics), and I agree with you when it comes to Follow You, Follow Me.
