I don't care what anyone says. I like Tom Cruise. I always enjoy his movies and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. So what if he's a little crazy with the scientology thing? I'm a little crazy about libertarianism. We all have our quirks.

Failed Libertarian.
Actually, his acting is always at least good. That he's crazy outside of the acting world makes no difference...

Oh yeah, I could not care any less about his personal life.
His acting is just lesser then Will Smiths, in this case. Though IMO he is not bad...had some good roles.

He doesn't possess the ability to play a believable human being. It could be that his is, in fact, an alien but it seems more likely that he's just a completely zoned out simpleton. He acts much like I'd imagine a robot would if Tom's lines were programmed into it.

Give me an example of a fine modern actor in your eyes.

Modern as in still alive: Bill Murray, Robert Duvall, Anthony Hopkins, De Niro (before he started making comedies)
Tom contemporaries (give or take a few years): Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman, Ed Norton
Hell, there are a ton of highly limited actors out there that can at least pull off believable human interaction. I know that since Tom can't do it in real life then I shouldn't expect him to be able to do it on screen.

Well, I guess all I can really is I don't agree with you, and I don't know what an actor has to do in order to meet your requirements to make them 'good' in your view.
Out of the older actors you named, I would say the first two aren't particularly impressive to me, but of the ones you listed who you oddly enough think are around Tom's age, I love them all. But I would add to the total list a few more: Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., and perhaps Natalie Portman.
I'm not sure if you agree with any of the folks I just listed, but at least you aren't the type who thinks good actors died with Lawrence Olivier. That means you're at least sensible enough about it.

Norton was the biggest stretch on the age. He is many years younger. Oldman and Day-Lewis are only few years older than Cruise and their careers do overlap.
I enjoy Liam Neeson, Robert Downey Jr, and Natalie Portman as well.
I enjoy a lot of actors but to me the really "good" one are those who have range and turn in consistently strong performances even if the movie itself is a junker.

Well, I agree, but I guess in my case the actors I just listed do that for me. I have yet to see a film featuring them where I didn't believe the part. As for Tom, well, I haven't seen all of his films, but I believed him as a drunk, has-been soldier-turned Samurai in The Last Samurai, and believed him as the lucid-dreaming mystery man David Aames in Vanilla Sky, and I also believed him as the successful businessman who discovers he has a savant for a brother in Rain Man. I guess my requirements aren't as specific as yours, or something. Tom Cruise the person is, by all accounts, a crazy, crazy man who is so separated from reality, it's chilling. But that doesn't make Tom Cruise the actor rubbish in my eyes.

I think Cruise is OK as an actor, but when it comes to acting, I'm more drawn to the ladies.

How expensive is it to go on a Tom Cruise anyway?

The Fresh Prince gets my vote. I love watching marathons of that show.

Just replace the word 'go' with its opposite, then you'll get a better idea.

Will Smith because I really hate Tom Cruise...not that he hasn't done some good movies, I loved Rain Man, he just annoys the hell out of me.
