I suppose it would be quite fair if we could vote twice that would keep the poll (contest) tied.

Oh wait... we have! And it did!

So let's see, that's at least two people who have joined the forums only to vote in this poll (after which they'll never be seen again, maybe?).  Keep it up Josh, you're increasing the site's member count!

LOL It would be hilarious if the tie continued for weeks.

122 to 122

Isn't it time to declare a tie and retire any  band that passed with 20, 30 or 40 votes?

Let them both advance and see if a 3 bands poll can make the diference. If Floyd are in the poll I wouldn't vote for Yes again....

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Yep, I'd like to see them both advance (though that would probably give Floyd an unfair advantage as I could see the vote being more split down Genesis and Yes lines who like both of those, if you know what I mean).

Even though this is just a popularity contest, and lesser-known ones that have fewer votes than these won't have a chance in the end, I would not like to see those eliminated (at least that offers some more exposure to lesser-known ones and gives the contest more variety to come). My favourites are commonly lesser-known.

Another idea, said fancifully, is that the Yes or Genesis winner is decided by another poll which pits two albums up against each-other.  I suggest it be Yes' Open Your Eyes vs. Genesis Invisible Touch.

I disagree.  One of the things I have really liked about how UndercoverBoy set up this whole thing from the beginning was the arrangement of the bands into their PA-designated subgenres.  This way groups like Magma, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Henry Cow have actually lasted longer.  I really liked the idea of some of the big boys being knocked out early because they had to face off within, say, the Symphonic category.

So, to be perverse about it, I'd rather see Genesis and Yes be knocked out rather than have them both go forward.

Oh, I love it!  Or we could pit the singers against each other, you know, Ray Wilson vs Trevor Horn!

Good one!

And yeah, having both advance, even though I like the idea of ties, is not really practical or would be a good thing to do.

Another idea, though people might say it is unfair, would be to tally up the results of all of the Genesis vs. Yes favourite or best of the two bands polls (not albums, nor specific periods). The former polls (from earliest to latest -- interesting to note that Genesis has become more popular over the years when compared to Yes, so probably as times have changed it's not a good idea, and the questions are sufficiently different to render such an idea poor.  The first poll is a slaughter, but then it's about better overall, not preferred):

Or if it hasn't been done already, set a specific time for the voting to end and stick with it.

Wow. This one is close. Exciting in a way, but raises the question of how reliable the answer is likely to be outside of this particular poll. Not a criticism of the poll by the way: just a recognition of the importance of both bands.

468+564=1032 votes total from those polls you listed...Yes got 564 votes, Genesis 468.  564/1032=54.6511628%, 468=45.3488372%.  Close even then, but Yes has a higher percentage overall.

Salty John,. forget the first poll, apparently it was a multiple option, Yes will never take such advantage of almost 100 votes.

Any of both bands will win by very tight margin.

Nice spelling of my name. Wink

I didn't know it was a multi-vote, but I just went with the numbers Greg posted here.

I don't believe it was. I checked it now (http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12439), and multiple votes are not enabled. I expect that the majority felt that Yes was stronger than Genesis when considering their whole output.
