I've only delved a bit into shoegaze and there's some decent stuff out there.  I like the more metal oriented shoegaze though, stuff like Rosetta or Mouth of the Architect.

Rosetta is pretty good. Haven't heard Mouth of the Architect yet.

Two lo-fi bands I like a lot are A Place to Bury Strangers and Titus Andronicus. The second made my current favorite 2010 album.
