My surname could be Norman though.  I'm not sure.  I personally believe its origin is from a village in England and someone used that village name as their surname.  Much like the Normans did.  So for example, a man named Thomas could have lived in Norwich and would have been known as Thomas de Norwich (only due to no official spelling conventions, Norwich could be spelt a different way).

So it could be a Saxon saying he is of a particular place, or he could be a Norman doing the same thing.  I just don't know.
