I love Coheed and Cambria (I'm finishing up In Keeping Secrets as I type this). I don't see why they would hate PT... really, I can't find a reason why they wouldn't like them just because they like Coheed.

What we heard of Coheed and Cambria wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as Porcupine Tree, who they followed.

We drove two days to get to the concert, because Marek had a truck to deliver in South Carolina, so after Porcupine Tree was done, Marek wanted to leave immediately. I was more inclined to stick it out, as I wasn't familiar with Coheed and Cambria, and liked the opening band The Dear Hunter very much; but after a few songs, realizing I would never be able to understand the lyrics due to the excessive reverb, I gave up as well.

The reverb was so bad that, had I not known the songs so well, I would have had trouble understanding even Steven Wilson, and we all know how good he is about clearly enunciating his lyrics.

The sound in the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium just wasn't all that good - a shame for all the bands. Hopefully they didn't have the same problem in the other venues.

I understand that the last time Porcupine Tree played Asheville, in 2007, they played at the Orange Peel, which is apparently a legendary venue, which has been written up several times in Rolling Stone. Maybe next time they will play there again - it is supposed to have fabulous sound.

Very little is as good as PT, so I'm not surprised! Tongue

The idea of this tour was to expose PT to a younger audience in the US. I am not sure if it was fully successful, judging from all the PT hate I read on C&C forums Disapprove

Because PT is more experimental than coheed, there is no pop influence on PT so coheed fans cant get into it.

that's probably the main reason, but pt actually have some pop infuence. the beach boys were one of the main influences for stupid dream. steven also likes abba and lcd soundsystem and more.

PT actually have a lot of pop influences, more than I feel like listing right now.
The real difference between Coheed and PT is the punk influence and the fact that Coheed has a very hardcore-inspired sound... at least in their early days they did moreso.

Too lazy to read whole thread, but what albums are good for starters? I saw them live at a festival during the summer, and they were AWESOME, but I have a feeling that I would have enjoyed the show more if I had knew some of their songs prior to the concert.

In Absentia is the best all around IMO (incuding the production). Very experimental and very hard rock.

Yeah, I have noticed In Absentia works wonders in turning people on to the band. It made my dad and brother fans! You really can't go wrong with that album.

I'd say there's at least one poppy track on every album they've done, actually, although Stupid Dream is definitely their champion pop album.

I'd start with one (prefferably both) of the following: Lightbulb Sun or In Absentia. If they don't get you hooked I don't know what will.

I could say the same about most of their albums, speaking personally, but I realize some are more accessible to first-time listeners than others.

I came to Porcupine late, in 2006, and the first two albums I got to know well were Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet, which were the two most recent studio albums at the time. I took them, along with half a dozen other albums, when I had a three day course over a long weekend.

None of the other albums got played.

That was more than enough to hook me. Enjoy your journey.

Commercial Break: My own mail order company Headphone Dust have got the 2LP marbled vinyl edition of In Absentia back in stock - not too many of these left, and not sure if we will get it again (it's limited to only 1,500). Insurgentes 2LP also back in stock. The IEM and Cover Version box sets are now sold out, but we think that Ton...eFloat might have a few IEM sets left on their mail order site, and the Cover Version CD singles are still available individually. That is except for CV6 which is completely gone, and now only available as part of the CV5+6 7 inch vinyl pairing, but that's also limited - still following this?! Oh, also got the digibook CD edition of PT's Recordings - as cheap as we could make it, can't compete with Amazon, but then who can (Play.com maybe). But at least you know if you buy from us you are buying direct from the "artistes". Finally, there's 2 copies left of the split Fear Falls Burning / Bass Communion 7 inch. OK, commercial over.
