List of Pros:
Less people in jail, Less prisons, less prison guards, less parole officers, clear up logged jam court agendas,  less money spent on enforcement,  creates new local jobs and businesses, curtails some of the drug wars in Mexico, gets rid of dangerous illegal growers in national parks and wild lands, some medicinal benefits for cancer patients and others with chronic pain and a growth of public tax revenues both from tax on the product and less government spending.

List of Cons:
Some people will abuse and hurt others (i.e. traffic accidents) some people will get hurt on the job being under the influence,  smart people become stupid,  some people will wreck their jobs, marriages and other relationship through abuse, "What were we just talking about?" type of questions becomes a big problem in communicating.

No brainer to me.  It is on the ballot in California to legalize it this year and I am voting yes.

Allthough the official policy has changed in the last ten years in Denmark towards less tolerance and more fines for even personal possession of weed, culminating in the closing of Pusher Street in Christiania http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freetown_Christiania in 2004, I still think most Danes are pretty liberal when it comes to Marijuana. Of course I can´t speak for the whole population, but most people I know think that legalization is the only way forward. Personally I think it´s a personal choice. If you ask me alcohol is a much worse sinner and not many people are talking about removing that from the shelves.

On a sidenote the closing of the marijuana trade in Christiania has brought a lot of bad things with it. Before the closing of the trade in 2004 people came to Christiania when they wanted to puchase their weed and while there were smoking clubs and pushers other places in the country as well before 2004, we now have maybe ten times as many now and most of them are controlled by hardcore gangs. We´ve even had a gang war going on in Denmark in the last couple of years with people getting shot in the street ( even innocents), which is pretty likely connected to the trade of marijuana ( and harder drugs). Something that you didn´t see as much of when most of the trade was situated at Christiania. One other thing that was great about the trade on Christiania compared to the trade in the clubs and at the local pushers is that hard drugs are forbidden on Christiania. If you caught with hard drugs on Christiania you´ll be thrown out of the freetown. At the clubs and at the local pusher the kids are much more likely to be exposed to the trade of hard drugs when they come to buy their weed.

Pros: People would be free to own their own bodies. People would be free from arbitrary government imprisonment and fines. The black drug-market would take a large hit and lives would be saved.

Cons: None

All of these actually benefit most everybody.

List of Cons:

All of these are consequence of individual decisions and actions.

I agree with that decision.

Another massive benefit would be that HEMP would then be legal.

...hemp is legal

I'm not only in favor of legalizing pot, but they should actually legalize everything.

There as an official research by the Callifornia government about that and, in the first year of legalization alone, there would be an increase of almost 3 billion dollars in tax money: stop spending 1.3 billion dollars with repression and gain 1.5 billion dollars with marijuana taxes.

Besides, statiscally, drug legalization lead to less consuption and less drug-related problems. Just see the Netherlands and PORTUGAL.

The laws sometimes have unintended consequences.  Alcohol prohibition was very profitable for the mob in this country.  The Mexican drug gangs are prospering with illegality of other psychoactive substances.

You can try to lock everyone up.  We have record incarcerations for drug offenses in this country already.  There is another way:

A decade ago Portugal took a radical new approach to illegal drugs by treating users as people with social problems rather than as criminals

Legalise weed and prog rock may come back in a big way! Either that or everyone would just sit around in their pants eating Jaffa cakes all day...
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Cough cough cough cough.  LOL

I'm going to have to look up Jaffa cakes, I have no idea what the hell they are.  Now I have heard of Alice B. Toklas.

OK looked it up.  Not quite the same thing.
