Thought these chaps deserved a bit more exposure round these parts. They're perhaps a tad too poppy for t'archives (we'll see how their first album turns out, shall we?) but their music is nothing short of brilliant. Dense, complex and insanely catchy. I can't stop listening to them, and this song in particular:

I think they left something out somehow.
Interesting. |

More than a tad too poppy.
I'm not sure what that song means, but I can't help but feel that song lyrics about Photoshop and extra lives are a bad omen for the direction of our civilization.

I think it's fair to say those lyrics are being delivered with a fair amount of cynicism. "I have skin like a waxen peel/and a face that I can never feel" and the like doesn't exactly sound celebratory, does it? And yeah, I'm not surprised you found them too poppy, Henry; free jazz, they ain't. Nonetheless, I reckon there's a lot for a prog fan to enjoy in their music, especially if you're into twiddly, fussy song arrangements a la Gentle Giant. |

The point is not that they're celebratory, but that we've entered an age where Photoshop is a metaphor. But hey, isn't that a copyrighted word? Did they get permission? My point wasn't that I found them too poppy (and therefore they suck), I was just saying that I think they're way too poppy for PA. But that doesn't mean somebody on PA won't like them!

So why is that "a bad omen for the direction of our civilization"? As for needing permission... surely not? It's just a brand name. if they were being explicitly libellous they might have some trouble, but I can't see Adobe getting too worked up about the word being used in this kind of context. Besides, Photoshop has gone beyond brand status now; it's a verb, like "hoover" (or to use a more US-friendly example, Xerox). |

I don't care if I'm the only person posting in this thread, but this band is phenomenal. I've not heard this track before, but it is just pure prog. I cannot flippin' wait for their album!

Thanks a lot, Trouserpress, that link was great ...the other links didn't work ...problem with the browser. Didn't like the way the middle guy screamed but I can live with that. This was pretty Gentle Giant-like indeed.
EDIT: Couldn't get the first track to work but heard the second one. Great stuff, thanks again, Trouserpress, well spotted. Freakin' haven't been blown away by a current prog act this way , I am with you in looking forward to their album...got to go check out any info on them on the net. Thought I'd give this thread a bump with some new info. The new single's out on Monday (can't wait to hear the B-side - the band have good form with them) and the album is apparently entitled "Man Alive" and will be out on August 23rd. I think I might burst from waiting.

I just have to share this BBC session performance of Schoolin'. There are a few extra vocals and other flourishes tucked away in here which are missing from the studio version. I do love a band that continually hones and tweaks their songs.

This is out on the 30th and has already had reviewers gushing with praise and scratching their heads trying to describe the sounds. I reckon this is gonna be a hard album to top this year. Despite the shiny pop exterior, this band is seriously making some of the most genuinely progressive music I've heard in years. |

I hear you, I haven't been excited about a new band this way, I mean I heard Radiohead's OK Computer in 2006, too late!

The album's currently available to stream in full on their myspace page. I can honestly say there isn't a weak track on it. This album is just... words fail me. Rarely have I heard music recorded in my lifetime that's so foward-thinking, all-encompassing, cerebral, emotionally charged and diverse. Under that skin of accessible melodies and poppy hooks there's complex arrangements Gentle Giant would be proud of and soaring anthems which feel like symph prog epics squeezed into five minute songs. I just cannot overstate how brilliant this album is, however much of a gushing loon it makes me seem. I urge every single open-minded reader of this forum to set aside an hour of their day and embrace one of the most breathtakingly creative new bands to emerge from this country.

Why is his voice so annoying? I listen to lots of things that makes everybody leave the room, and it's great, but he's a corkscrew into my brain. I still managed to make it through half the album while PAing, but the music sounds too much like indie rock.

Wow that is annoying. Not that I have anything against annoying music. (Rats and monkeys crowd the city as it crumbles into.... RUUUIIINS) But this is not my style. Thanks for sharing anyway though. |

All post 1970 music is fail.
The only good music was made before 1970, after that it's just a bunch of talentless rubbish. |

Wow, I actually listened to the whole album, I guess I'm a masochist. Or I was entranced by how uniquely annoying it was.
Also, I think it's hilarious that you love this band so much that you probably had an erection while you wrote that, but you think the Paper Chase's singer is too annoying. :P
This joke really isn't funny anymore. And Walter actually already made that post in this thread and it got deleted. |
