Topic: The prog "Grunge"? Posted: August 02 2010 at 16:12 |
This Thread was made to test a theory of mine ( and to win a bet with my friend ). I have noticed that a fair amount prog-lovers have a certain liking for one or two grunge bands. Now some of the Grunge bands, which have been mentioned above, have been influenced mostly by Punk and Metal but also, to a lesser extent, by progressive rock, whether the bands know it or not ![Tongue Tongue](smileys/smiley17.gif) .
Even though some bands are just loud and obnoxious (Sorry Nirvana fans) Kurt Cobain listed "Red" by King Crimson as a major influence.
Now to the theory of mine. I want to see which is the favorite Grunge band of my fellow prog enthusiasts. If my theory is correct that certain band will get the most votes by far.
Hope you guys like even though it's not really prog-related ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif) . I will post that certain bands name when enough votes come in.

^I don't know them all, but I think I know which band is the one you're thinking of, it's Soundgarden, right?
Anyway, my favorite is not them, for me it has to be Eddie Vedder & Co.

Grunge is the genre that killed music. No vote.

There's a section called "General Polls" for things like this. Just so you know for next time. ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif) Alice in Chains is the best grunge band without a shadow of a doubt. Soundgarden and PJ are tied for second. Then Nirvana.

Not quite but it was a good guess ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif) And yes Pearl Jam happens to be my favorite "grunge" band although they're not really grunge.

That's not in the options. ![Ermm Ermm](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley24.gif)
Grunge, for me, was a great revival of 70's hard rock with 80's metal influences. A great relief from weak metal genres like Power Metal and Glam Metal, and it's good to know that these were popular unlike other 90's stuff that was complete crap.
Though I know you just are an unshamed post-eighties-phobic.

I can't agree with Walter that music is "dead" (I like plenty of other newer music), but I don't seem to like any grunge. I find it painful. (I think radio music went way downhill when it came along.)
To me, "prog grunge" would seem to be oxymoronic. (Even the words would seem to be at odds.)
![Smile Smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif) But carry on! I only post this by way of representing one -- perhaps mainly older -- prog fan perspective on grunge.

They have already corrected the poster, no need to remind him again and in such a cold way.

If you know that he's a new guy, you can tell him where the correct section is, and since you're here, you can add something to the purpose of the poll...

I agree. Undertow was a great grunge album and very proggy.
But since its not an option I'll go with soundgarden, I mean they have a song with someone playing the spoons. Whats not prog about that? ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

I wanted to put Tool as an option but my friend said ( translated from serbian): "No Dude you can't put them on the poll! They're alternrock and you know it" I granted him that wish because he was going to lose anyway. Details of the bet later on. ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif)
Edit: sorry chemebien me and my friend always thought of Blind Melon as an alternative rock band

From the list, Soundgarden. Outside the list, The Melvins, of course.

Yeah, I'm stretching the grunge definition a lot, but I say Tool and the Pumpkins are the closest things to prog-grunge

Soundgarden is the proggiest/most psychedelic from the list, AIC - the heaviest, Nirvana - the greatest... PJ - a nice rocking band, never uderstood the "grunge" label though, probably it was invented for wannabies such as Stone Temple Pilots... and No, the so called grunge did not kill music, it saved it from the awful hair metal so it was one of the most progressive things to happen in the early 90s :)
