Topic: Who is your favourite keyboard player? Posted: July 31 2010 at 13:15 |
Mine is the incredible Kerry "God Of The Clavinet" Minnear , followed closely by John Evan and Rick Wright! but they're all among my favourites, with the possible exception of (sorry) Vangelis.
Thanks for your votes

and considering classical pianism, 'tis Glenn Gould, Wilhelm Kempff, Artur Schnabel, Robert Casadesus, Emil Gilels, John Ogdon, Claudio Arrau and Vladimir Sofronitzky, and Richter-Horowitz-Rubinstein of course, as always.

1. George Duke (an overlooked complete master of the keyboards, plus he's funky!)
2. Rick Wright (his keyboards have always been a very important in Floyd's music and that's one of the reasons I love them)
3. John Evan (his Hammond-Organ work on Thick as a Brick is brilliant while his Moog work in A Passion Play is really interesting)
4. Dave Stewart (another overlooked master keyboard player, simply delightful on the organ, rhodes and synths)
5. Kerry Minnear (unique style: technical, freaky and FUN!)
6. Gregg Rolie (splendid Hammond work with Santana)
7. Josef Zawinul (once again we have here a completely overlooked keyboard player by Prog Rock fans, although Joe doesn't play Prog Rock, his keyboard has always been! Very atmospheric with excellent synths)
8. Herbie Hancock (I prefer Corea, but Hancock has always been equally innovating or even more! Just that his style is not really my thing, though he sure knows how to play!)
9. Mike Ratledge (brilliant stuff he has made)
Honorable mentions: Eddie Jobson for his Zappa work, Sinclair, Banton and Jones.

Dave Stewart. His approach is just so preferable to any of the big prog rock organ players in my mind. He has so much feel and style, and a damn good tone. His softer tone is amazing on organ, as is his Rhodes Piano....ing(?), and when he kicks the fuzz and wah on his organ, it's just pure bliss. His work with National Health, Hatfield, Khan, Egg, Bruford, Steve Hillage, and more has definitely made him my favorite.
Good mentions : George Duke(I only know him with Zappa), Robert Wyatt (just as on drums I absolutely love his style), Dave Sinclair (some great work on If I Could... and in Winter Wine), and Tim Hodgkinson(I've only heard him with Henry Cow, but a lot of Henry Cow).
