Topic: Best German Band From the 1970`s Posted: March 18 2004 at 10:46 |
It`s obvious from the recent thread that there are at least a few people out there in cyberland who are interested in the German music scene as it was back in the 1970`s. Whatever you want to call it there were a number of remarkable bands which emerged from this movement playing in a variety of styles. Guru Guru remains my personal fave. Here are some of the better known bands from this era who fit into the category of progressive rock in one way or another.

I only included those that I thought more people would know. Amon Duul didn't even last that long after the split anyway and were nowhere nearly as successful as Amon Duul II.

I would have voted for either Eloy or Tangerine Dream had they been there. The only band from that list I know is Triumvirate who I absolutely loathe! (a blatant ELP rip-off)

So far no one's pleased with the options! Triumvirat had a couple of good albums in the early 70's, though I didn't really care for anything beyond Spartacus.

I think that you forget to mention numerous bands from this period. I think notably to the Berlin scene with Agitation free (who are my fave), Myhtos...I think also about psych/ folk prog bands such as Broselmaschine or the medieval Ougenweide...how to remediate to this MISTAKE!
But among your list, it's sure for me that Neu! is the best, after I would mention Amon Dull II, Guru Guru and CAN.

i might say CAN, the mixing of music and psycodelic behavior is great, a strange band with strange singers, what do you know!

And what about such great albums as:
Tomorrow's Gift 1971 S/t
Ikarus 1971 S/t
Epitaph - two albums (1971/1972) in the vein of early Wishbone Ash with lots of progressive elements
Frumpy - one of the best (maybe BEST!!!!) german prog rock band with brilliant Inga Rumpf. Her voice is smth unique and incredible
Haze - one album and one chef-d'oeuvre!!! I have never heard smth like this
Virus - great early proto-prog band
...so I can't vote for any band that is presented there... The choice is TOO small...
Oh I forgot WALLENSTEIN. Their fistr, second and third albums are best sympho-prog from Germany IMHO

Drum roll please... ... my 100th post.
My fav German bands from that era are Eloy, Tangerine Dream, Cluster, UFO and Amon Duul II. Ergo I guess the later gets my vote since it's listed.
(Yes I'm aware UFO wasn't real prog. Everyone needs a little headbanging now and again.)

Thank God you didn't suggest ELOY Vibe, otherwise you would've put me in the middle of a crossroad! So, following that stream, my vote completely goes to GROBSCHNITT (think we had had a conversation upon the band before, huh?)
Peace,
