It`s obvious from the recent thread that there are at least a few people out there in cyberland who are interested in the German music scene as it was back in the 1970`s. Whatever you want to call it there were a number of remarkable bands which emerged from this movement playing in a variety of styles. Guru Guru remains my personal fave. Here are some of the better known bands from this era who fit into the category of progressive rock in one way or another.

I only included those that I thought more people would know. Amon Duul didn't even last that long after the split anyway and were nowhere nearly as successful as Amon Duul II.

I would have voted for either Eloy or Tangerine Dream had they been there. The only band from that list I know is Triumvirate who I absolutely loathe! (a blatant ELP rip-off)

Posted By: Vibrationbaby

So far no one's pleased with the options! Triumvirat had a couple of good albums in the early 70's, though I didn't really care for anything beyond Spartacus.

I would have voted for Eloy aswell but out of the list I choose Amon Duul II.

I think that you forget to mention numerous bands from this period. I think notably to the Berlin scene with Agitation free (who are my fave), Myhtos...I think also about psych/ folk prog bands such as Broselmaschine or the medieval Ougenweide...how to remediate to this MISTAKE!

But among your list, it's sure for me that Neu! is the best, after I would mention Amon Dull II, Guru Guru and CAN.

i might say CAN, the mixing of music and psycodelic behavior is great, a strange band with strange singers, what do you know!

...and 2066&then, Dies Irae, Emtidi, Orange Peel, Gaa, Gomorrha, Cluster...?

And what about such great albums as:

Tomorrow's Gift 1971 S/t

Ikarus 1971 S/t

Epitaph - two albums (1971/1972) in the vein of early Wishbone Ash with lots of progressive elements

Frumpy - one of the best (maybe BEST!!!!) german prog rock band with brilliant Inga Rumpf. Her voice is smth unique and incredible

Haze - one album and one chef-d'oeuvre!!! I have never heard smth like this

Virus - great early proto-prog band

...so I can't vote for any band that is presented there... The choice is TOO small...

Oh I forgot WALLENSTEIN. Their fistr, second and third albums are best sympho-prog from Germany IMHO

Drum roll please...       <SMILIE>  ... my 100th post.      <SMILIE>

My fav German bands from that era are Eloy, Tangerine Dream, Cluster, UFO and Amon Duul II.  Ergo I guess the later gets my vote since it's listed.

(Yes I'm aware UFO wasn't real prog.  Everyone needs a little headbanging now and again.)  <SMILIE>

Thank God you didn't suggest ELOY Vibe, otherwise you would've put me in the middle of a crossroad! So, following that stream, my vote completely goes to GROBSCHNITT (think we had had a conversation upon the band before, huh?)

Peace,

I voted on my third personal option, AMON DUUL II. Why? Because nither Schicke, Fuhrs & Frohlling nor Agitation Freewere listed on this poll... a nice poll though

(I'd dare to say, "even better" than Rockpommel's... )

Enjoy!

I voted Grobschnitt, but the best album in the 70's German scene, for me, was the only Epidaurus release: an almost unknown band , but beautiful music .

How about "Kraan"...I wrote a review about an hour ago. Nobody really mentions them...I think they deserve to be mentioned, I really love their music.
Does anyone of you know them (I guess Phillipe knows them, I KNOw that he knows them because he knows almost EVERYTHING released by a german band in the70' )

Enterely right Zappa123...it's true that numerous bands miss on the list...but well I think I'm gonna vote for Novalis or Amon Duul (despite the fact that I really enjoy listening the music of most part of the bands mentionned above)

Yes where is Kraan. Got introduced to their first 5 albums in the last 18 months ( coincides with following EMI of Germany's release of remastered versions of those records on CD). I was started off by the experts in Krautrock, the Freeman brothers at Ultima Thule in Leicester ( http://www.ultimathulerecords.com/ - http://www.ultimathulerecords.com/ )

on Kraan's Live album. This is an outstanding live recording, and in particular  Helmutt Hattler's electric bass playing is magic - when the electric sax isn't taking lead, Hattler takes over and lets the guitarist play rhythm. Really a recording of an early jam jazz band?

Good gawd - what kind of choices are these?  I had to create an account just so I can respond.

Where is Cluster? Tangerine Dream? even Kraftwerk?

But, by far and away, Far And Away, FAR AND AWAY, WHERE IS FAUST!?!?!

# 1:  Faust

(distant) #2:  Neu!

#3: Can

#4: etc.

The Baldies know Kraan, of course. I often pointed out Helmut Hattler of Kraan should appear in any bass poll.

Of course not naming Embryo is a big oversight. And how about Annexus Quam? And no-one seems to know Between! (They are not even in the archive!). All in all there are a lot missing. (Ash Ra Tempel, Dzyan, Birth Control, Wallenstein, Brainstorm, Popol Vuh, Xhol Caravan, to name a few more).

What about Faust, Popol Vuh and Ash Ra Tempel?

From the options given, Can first with Neu! a pretty close second.

And I'll join the chorus demanding Kraan - their 1975 live album is incendiary!
