Excuse me for "interrupting", but of course he is allowed to have an opinion and I'd very much like him to express it, also if it's contradictory to what I think - that's why we are here  The thing was, that he was not (IMO) allowed to say what he said in that particular thread - it was no proper answer to the question (and this latter remark is nót IMO, I think that's a fact, but mayby I'm coming off too strongly now ).Anyway, that was what I thought: I'm glad he's done so much for this site and for the Neo-prog section as well - my favorite! I've had my eye on Lorely for a while now, just wanted to make sure it was the right choice. Once I get it(hopefully in the next two weeks) I'll let you all know what I think of it. Thanks again everybody.

^^ --On the top of this page, below the heading "Prog Archives"-symbol, there is a small blue cog-like symbol on the left-hand side. Click on the text next to it. The symbols Below is what the next screen looks like. Click on the "Profile" tab. On this page, if you scroll down, you can see what your avatar is in the "Select Avatar" space. You can click on " [Avatar Upload] " below the list of the generic avatars. Then "browse" your computer for a picture you want to be your avatar. Then click upload, then when you find the one you want (it should be displayed in the file preview) click ok. There ya go for the avatar part.
--To change the words beneath your posts, otherwise known as your "signature," scroll down on the Edit Profile page until you see the blank space in the "Signature" section. Type in whatever you want there, and make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Update Profile." You must do this in order for your profile to successfully update.
--That should be about it.

Ok, I think this thread has been silent long enough now, I'm not used to this and I don't want to get used to this either! So let's keep focussed on Marillion ! ! ! I lately voted in this poll about what my favorite Fish-era Marillion-song would be - and I know most of you have voted there too -; this had got me thinking, what would be the order of my favorite Fish albums from best to "worst" (maybe I should change that into "best, but just slightly less favorite to me than the other three So your homework for this week is to relisten all of the Fish-era albums (you own/know) and make a list ranking from best to... well you get the point. Of course, if you know it already, you don`t have to relisten the albums, but I know I surely have to!
I`m looking forward to see your lists and especially to read, why they are the way they are - Explain, please! ! !

Clutching At Straws
I just find the songs to be better constructed than any of the previous albums. Seemed to be a bit more streamlined and got to the point rather than, say, Script, where the music strayed. Additionally, even though the tension and pressure led to the demise of this era of Marillion, I strongly believe that it led to a more dynamic album that it's predecessors. I know Rothery was especially angry when he got in the studio to play the solo for "Sugar Mice". That anger definitely fuels an otherwise emotional and brilliant guitar solo. Misplaced Childhood This is where Marillion really began to hone their craft. The songs had impeccable melody without sacrificing the content or structure. If you listen to solo Fish, you see where it's been lacking ever since he left Marillion. The team of Trewavas,Kelly, Rothery, Mosley (and later Hogarth) just know how to construct a memorable song. And, I'm a sucker for concept albums. Beautiful album that rivals Clutching At Straws. Fugazi I find Fugazi a lot less pretentious than Script. They still hadn't found their "sound", but they were getting there. And what an upgrade Mosley was to Marillion. Musically, these guys became a force with a truly gifted drummer behind the kit. Script For A Jester's Tear I imagine back in the early 80's, this was a very important album in the world of progressive rock. Clearly riding on the influences of Genesis, Script grabbed the torch and kept progressive music going along with bands like Twelfth Night, Pendragon, Pallas and IQ. Aside from the brilliant title track, this album can oftentimes leave me cold. Fish's vocals are just a bit too over-the-top with the rolling of his 'r's' and such, but this is a very important album. E |

I thought the band as a whole improved over the course of...what...the next 5 years or so. For Script, however, I just found Fish to be too much of the focal point in the performance. I don't mind theatrics and such, but maybe tone it down. Again, that's just me. I don't necessarily see Fish as the weak link because what they did was pure magic. You have to admit that something was missed when he went on to do his solo work. It's not really a Fish thing, either. I'm sure Hogarth on his own would be missing a little something that we're used to. There's just a nice chemistry when everybody is involved. E |

Yes, of course, I agree with you, Fish without Marillion misses something; I also don't really listen that closely to the music of Fish's solo work, bacause it is not about the music with Fish, it is about the lyrics and his vocals. I think it's a pity Fish left Marillion, but then again, if he wouldn't have left Marillion, I'd think it a pity that Hogarth was not with Marillion - although I wouldn't have known him then, of course - so it's a bit like choosing between two evils. And well, I hope it 'll stay this way for EVER
 : it's good the way it is.(I hope Fish is going to recover well from his cancer, though

Best to worse Fish era LPs. Difficult one, but I'll try:
1. Misplaced Childhood. The almost perfect example of how a concept album can be fused with approachable, and, dare I say it, commercial music fit for radio airplay. It's an incredible story, and one, I'm sure, that resonates with many on this forum as regards alienation and sheer frustration at the state of the world. Personally, I find the first tracks of side two to be utterly powerful and amongst the best this band have ever done. 2. Script. I think I've said before on the forum that this LP was a milestone. A band who took influences from the classic prog era, and turned those into an incredibly mature and original debut - just the sort of fix a prog starved nation needed at the time. Amongst the finest debut LPs of all time. 3. Fugazi Consistently under rated, this contains some magnificent tracks, especially Assassin and the title track. A developmental album which further refined the art of fusing serious and great prog musicianship with a more commercial edge. 4. Clutching At Straws Although containing some incredibly strong tracks (Slainte Mhath, Sugar Mice and Warm Wet Circles come to mind), this was also clearly the sound of a band exhausted after a few years of continual touring, recording, and substance abuse. It should not have been recorded really - they needed a break. Just a few quick thoughts to add to the debate - a great thread  |

Ok, finally, here's my list - sorry for the late respons:
Misplaced Childhood
A beautiful concept album revolving around the horror and beauty that is adolescence
 Fish's vocals are - as usual - very strong and the different musical ideas and pieces flow into on another beautifully. Fantastic guitar solo's, really amazingly creative bass-work, interessting drumming accompanied by nice key-layers.Script for a Jester's Tear
Script for a Jester's Tear is - and has
 - the best opening track I've heard so far: a really powerful song and the lyrics are outstanding. The band are still young and altough the Script sounds really good, you can notice they still have to learn a lot and especially the drumming sounds awkward from time to time.Fugazi
With the addition of Ian Mosley Marillion really became Marillion musically. Now, they were able to extend tracks keeping the same melody whilst keeping it more than interessting, fascinating is the right word; this can be seen in tracks like She Chameleon and Fugazi.
Clutching at Straws
My least favourite Fish-era LP. The first three songs are absolutely stunning and the expectations are high, but then come Going Under and Just for the Record which do not compliment the first three any good. The closure of the album is again a magnifiscent song with the same mood as the first three and a nice vocal part with Fish and a woman - Tessa Niles - at the end. The other songs in between of the first three and the last one range from very good (White Russian, Sugar Mice) to "ok" (Incommunicado), but can't keep up with the four mentioned.

But then again, the construction of your list seems quite logical. You only talk about Fish in the Script section - and that wasn´t very positive - has he improved enormously during his Marillion period in your opinion? or do you think him still to be the `weaker´ link in the chain?
