...In fact, you're talking about Univers Zéro with three "new" members!

Ann Stewart, Denis Van Hecke, Gérard Hourbette, Christian Genet and Charles Loos weren't in UZ.
So that makes only three UZ members.

I'd also add Véronique Verdier on trombone to that band.

Christian Genet WAS in UZ. He played on the first LP and on Uzed. So, it makes 4 members from UZ. Et toc, Monsieur!
Speaking of Denis van Hecke, I've just read he played with Michel Berckmans in the ensemble Musique Flexible - Michel Berckmans also present in UZ!!!
And Gérard Hourbette led Art Zoyd, which welcomed Daniel Denis as a drummer.

So, we(re hardly far from UZ with your list, mon jeune ami.

LOL D'accord, d'accord!
But I already knew Berckmans was in UZ. And I knew all that you said in your post.

I see Genet as a Present member more than an UZ one.

This would be my super group from the late 70's. Take the following musicians and do a heavy prog album.
Vox - John Palumbo - Crack the Sky
Guitars - Allan Holdsworth ; Martin Pugh - Armageddon & Steamhammer
Bass - Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Drums - Bobby Caldwell - Captain Beyond & Armageddon

There is no way that would actually sound good. My head hurts just thinking about it. Why so many Japanese people, what happened to the European prog? And what the hell is Ravi Shankar doing there?

I don't know, I don't waste mental energy on things that are never going to happen. :P

What's Ravi Shankar doing there?  Looks to me like he's playing sitar.

I think what he meant is that Ravi Shankar is not progressive enough to be involved with "prog".

Sad, too, because it was Ravi that went on tour with Yehudi Menuhin doing an East meets West series and they were both magnificent and even improvised several times in concert. Menuhin learned to do ragas with him, and did it well. It was never recorded as music per se, but they used to do it in concert.

A lot of progressive music is just called that because they did not follow the conventional trax of the musical business. Sadly, in some cases, there are way too many people trying to find a way to peg it down as a part of the music business concept. Anything to help sales I suppose.

The majority of "prog" (I'll say again) was a reaction to popular music not being intelligent and just repeating jingles over and over again with a different person! And folks like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks and many others helped break the mold even further. Progressive came out of that,. sadly even folks here are afraid to consider The White Album"  a progressive album ... which it is as is "Abbey Road". Specially for the time that they came out. So far out and away from pop music as to be totally off the wall! And making classical music sound repetitive and boring ... here was a new idiom and it was being used to expand it all. Classical music, has been regressing for 65 years now!

Sometimes, some things are so progressive that they are weightless and no one even knows how to measure them! This board is no exception!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

The only additions to an already formidable "band" in my opinion would be the addition of Gavin Harrison as second drummer and Steven Wilson on second guitar and vocals. If you REALLY found it necessary to add a keyboard player, I'd consider Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater primary due to his excellent capabilities and the fact that his style differs greatly over those whose names constantly come up like Wakeman, Emerson and the like that've have played EXACTLY the same way for years !! (yawn!)

Seeing as you've already "borrowed" from Porcupine Tree heavily why not consider Richard Barbieri, an accomplished keyboard player in his own right and Markus Jehle from RPWL on additional keys or even Tomas Bodin of the Flower Kings ?

Better yet ... have them do one with Magma! And add Maddy Prior while at it!

Ohhh heck. Join up with Lisa Garrard and Klaus Schulze ... even Jon can appreciate some chanting, I'm sure, and we will not have to worry about his voice not sounding right like in the old days!

Billy Cobham on drums.
Danny Carey on drums.
The round smiling guy that plays tablas with Ravi Shankar.
David Jackson on saxomophone.
Conny Veit on guitar.
Percy Jones on fret less bass.
Mike Patton on animal sounds/song.
They would play some kind of deep percussive jungle psychedelic prog and make Animals point 2.0
