Does anyone here have a top 10 list of best tech extreme metal albums? I have no true idea about this music. I dont like dark metal as a rule but am open to change if theres good stuff out there and no too evil sounding with dark lyrics.
thx in advance..,

Damn, I've just seen that Burst split at the end of last year, so it looks like the awsome Lazarus Bird (which IMO is better than 2/3rds of whats on that list you just posted harmonium) will be the bands last album.
I'm off to go listen to Prey on Life, Origio and Lazarus Bird, three amazing albums.

I don't care about that list either, but it's our list, so we should acknowledge it. And it's a good place to start.
I wouldn't bet on that, reunions are today's fashion (and business). |

Oh its a good list a definitely a good place to start with Ex/Tech, but I rate Lazarus Bird very highly.
They have said that its possible but not in the forseeable future.

That Blotted Science album title should NOT read machinations of dimentia, rather it should be spelled Dementia...
I'm just sayin'... |

Here's the holy trinity of tech/extreme prog metal... 1. Edge of Sanity - Crimson (if you don't have this, you haven't lived yet) 2. Opeth - Still Life 3. Death - Symbolic |

Well, thanks to the existence of this genre in this site, I probably would have never wanted to listen to bands such as Mastodon or Opeth.

I just found on the internet samples from the new Negura Bunget album. I can't listen to them right now as it's late night here, so I'll post them for your enjoyment (?) From what I read everyone says it's not the same thing anymore, but they sound good. I'm very curious.

The new Negura Bunget is a grower. No, it's not the same, but still very good, and a worthy continuation of their legacy.
I see a lot about Dan Swano in this thread, but haven't read the whole thing. A truly great extreme prog metal band is one of his projects - Pan.Thy.Monium. The album 'Khaooos & Kon-Fus-Ion' is superb. Edit: Just noticed a mention of Pan.Thy.Monium, should be more observant. Interesting discussion regarding Esoteric too. We aren't exactly enamoured with the funeral doom label. When describing our music to people who have no idea of that kind of thing, I usually start with 'Pink Floyd'. Given that early Floyd, Crimson etc is probably the common denominator amongst all our influences, I suppose 'prog' will always be a part of the sound in one way or another. Long songs, orchestral arrangements, odd timings - all elements of prog, all elements of our music.

you're right, Voivod should be in there. I would say Nothingface is their crowning achievement.... most proggy, most technical.... my fave... but I like everything they have done except for the last two or three... It's just not the same without Piggy. I am saddened that I never saw them with him... OR... even got a chance to see them with Daniel Mongrain of Martyr on guitars!!!!

all Voivod's recorded material up to 'Infini' feature Piggy on guitar. And I love their last two albums 'Quatorze' (as it should be spelled ) and 'Infini', more rock than metal but very enjoyable. Also, the Eric Forrest era is very good and should be of interest to fans of tech/extreme prog metal, especially Negatron.

I know they "had" Piggy, but only in spirit, as those were pre-recorded demo tracks.... he really wasn't there to finetune the tunes.... that's what I mean.

I see you mention Condemned by Confessor in the list. I´ve been listening to that one a lot this last week. I´ve actually written a review for Metal Music Archives ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/) of that album, just haven´t posted it yet.
!!! I just realized that Confessor is not on PA!!! I´ve added them to the Prog metal chart for evaluation.
Here´s my review if anyone should be interested ( oh and don´t get bothered by the html tags if they show):
<B>Confessor</B> - <i>Condemned</i>
<i>Condemned</i> is the debut full-length studio album by American doom metal act <B>Confessor</B>. The album was released in October 1991 by <B>Earache Records</B>. The original album contained 9 tracks but there´s a Japanese version available with 3 additional bonus tracks.
The music on the album is a very unusual kind of doom metal. First of all the tempo isn´t snail tempo slow. It´s still brick heavy music but the tempo is mostly kept in slow- to mid pace. Secondly the music is quite technical compared to most other releases in the genre. Especially the drumming stands out as very busy and skillfully played, but the rest of the music is also rather intricate. Calling the music on <i>Condemned</i> progressive or technical doom metal wouldn´t be far off the mark. To top it all off there´s the distinct high pitched vocal delivery by <B>Scott Jeffreys</B>. He is the kind of singer that I usually associate with progressive rock/ metal. I´m reminded a bit of <B>Cedric Bixler-Zavala</B> from <B>The Mars Volta</B>. While <B>Scott Jeffreys</B> is a skilled vocalist, his vocal lines are kind of non-melodic and sometimes even close to atonal to my ears, and it will be a challenge to some, if they can digest them. If a bit more melody and variation had been put into the vocals, this album could have been even greater than it already is. Another unusual feature on a doom metal album is that the songs are not especially long. Most are about 4 minutes long but that´s only a good thing IMO. There´s not a dull moment in sight. <B>Confessor</B> are not the kind of band that play their riffs on repeat for several minutes. On the other hand some might miss gloomy atmosphere and slow building majestic doom climaxes. The music on <i>Condemned</i> has a more desperate sound to it instead. Many of the riffs on the album are thrash metal inspired but the drums make sure the pace is kept slow enough for this to be called a doom metal album.
The production lacks a bit of warmth if you ask me, but it´s still powerful and suits the music well.
<i>Condemned</i> is one of the most unique doom metal albums out there. Not only because the music on the album is unusually technical for the genre but also because of the distinct high pitched vocal delivery by <B>Scott Jeffreys</B>. If you want to challenge yourself to some technical/ progressive doom metal, <i>Condemned</i> is a great place to start. A 4 star rating is fully deserved. Just beware that <B>Confessor</B> are sure to be an aquired taste.

I've seen a lot of Dan Swano get mentioned. I've been getting into his music over the past year, and I really love the Moontower album, as well as Edge Of Sanity and his brothers project Pan.Thy.Monium
