Surprisingly, none.  Confused

I'd forgotten about that until you brought it up just now.

There's a huge difference between diversity in opinion and saying a problem practically doesn't exist at all. You're saying education as well as poverty has little to no effect when it's been statistically proven otherwise. It's impossible to debate with this kind of mentality.

And don't worry, I won't be staying or leaving on your behalf. Wink

Actually, my wife would like me to come to bed, so I'm going to do that.  Have a good night, Pat.

Finally someone realizes that the root of most crime is poverty and poor education.  Not to get into another argument, though.

Never have bought that mantra.  It doesn't help, for sure.  But there are oodles of poor, under-educated people out there who are law abiding, hard working, and proud of it.  And as pointed out, plenty of rich upper class crime.  The roots of crime IMO come from poor character, personal weakness, and some cultural elements.

Do clarify.

Question: have you ever in your life been in the position where you have to choose between either stealing or starving to death?

Yeah, that comment is right on.  The poor have free will just like anyone else, and I've seen this in my family and friends.  The rest of what you recently is your spin on that.

Answer: No.  and we covered that too.  We're talking about lesser poverty typical of USA urban cities, not third world starving to death kinda poverty.  But you are trying to muddy the waters.

I gotta run, catch you tomorrow night.

You're not thinking about the sociological aspect of things at all. Things like upbringing and environment including peers. I'm glad you had someone in your family to give you a strong moral upbringing; however, there are tons of people who aren't that fortunate. Problem is if you live in an area that crime is rampant then you're more likely to have a different perception than people who live in areas with little crime. If a child sees their parent committing crimes then they're more likely going to think it's natural. Then if you see your peers doing the same, it becomes even more engrained. Also problems like drug abuse (not just use) which doesn't just destroy single lives; it destroys entire social structures.

As the saying goes, "give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime" Education is without a doubt the greatest tool you can give a person. I don't know how you can say otherwise. If the education is lacking then you're severely limiting their options in life. Read the testimony I posted, you'll see how education, poverty, and crime are in fact statistically proven to be directly linked (in America mind you). These people are committing crimes as a means of survival. Agree with me or not, but people who have the means have more obligations, especially entrepreneurs who benefit greatly off the blood and sweat from workers they don't even pay proper living wages to. I ask you, who's really the leech here? It's also proven that economically everyone benefits from helping those in poverty. Who wouldn't want that? At the risk of opening up an entire new can of warms, the Republicans seem to want to deny the whole issue. They fear the rug will be pulled out from under their feet if they loosen their grip. That's a short-sided viewpoint, I mean just look at the current economy. These are legitimate issues that need to be looked at. If you ask me the real excuse is religion. People use it as a crutch to blame God for every bad situation in their life instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. Not to mention politicians love to use it as leverage for their personal gain while holding the world back from progress.

I do think we got off on the wrong foot, and I myself can be quick to throw punches, but I also think I've brought some extremely reasonable points to the table.

Closing, you seem like a good guy so don’t worry about punches, PA has seen far testier exchanges than ours and will again.  Just remember kool-aid comes in many flavors.

With regard to my family story being questioned, let me clarify.  I was speaking about others in my family, not myself.  I was lucky enough to have parents who reached lower middle class on their 10th grade education.  Like their 6 siblings on each sides, all 14 of them reached the middle class despite real poverty and little education.  On the flip side, many in my generation and younger commit crime despite their full bellies and much improved education and social welfare programs.

I’ve seen other poor in my life who face the daunting odds you lay out, and make the right choice.  In fact most do.  Those who do not have more than economics and education to blame.  Most are not starving and they are not stupid.  Many of the youth committing urban crime have food and nice cell phone plans to boot.  They are making bad choices knowing those choices are wrong.  That is personal weakness, not the recession or the poor economy.  The kind of people I’m talking about will be making the same choices once the economy is humming again.  Just watch.

But I think we agree on the stuff about upbringing and discipline, so we have some common ground.

On a side note, weren’t you the guy arguing so passionately in favor of Israel in the Flotilla thread?

Last, what does TheClosing refer to?

I went to a school in a rough neighborhood because my mother taught home economics there. Some of my friends didn't have a bed to sleep in and they'd go to sleep hungry. My best friend lived in a Motel Six in the worst area in the state. A lot of kids I knew took home economics specifically so they could eat the food. Sad thing is they closed down the home economics department when my mom retired. I learned not to judge them for some of the hard choices they had to make. I also learned to appreciate the things I had. All this well before the economy took a nose dive.

I wasn't arguing in favor of anyone really. I tried to explain much like in this thread that it's hard to make judgements unless you're in their shoes.

As for my sn, it's more of an imagery thing. You know like a bartender cleaning up some dump at closing time while drunks stumble out trying to make their way home. Heh, I dunno. Seemed interesting enough. So what's your stand for?

Closing, that's a cool name and the avatar pic is fantastic.

Mine is the name of one very cool 70s art-fusion band from Finland.  They're on PA but few people have discovered them.  Smile
