I have been working lately during my free time over my Workstation and finally tame the sequencer, which is something very easy to use (and I was too lazy to learn how to use it) so now I'm looking to compose and make songs directly with my workstation and recording it and see how things flows. I have one song already made inspired in the flow of the tracking and recording. So, I know here are a lot of great Keyboard experts so, if someone have an advise, a tip or anything useful about Sequencers and workstations I'm all ears...
I'm using the Korg M-50... which uses technology from the M-3, so, I'm all ears if someone help me with the process of recording... what do you say guys?

Cool, I just got a
Yamaha QY100 Sequencer Accompaniment ToolStill haven't sat down with it to figure it all out. Got stuck at getting it communicate MIDI wise with my synth and computers. So far I got my synth to change the default patch for the keyboard on it and I'm not entirely sure how that happened.Edited by Slartibartfast - April 05 2010 at 10:27 |

Jampa, I don't know how you have the patience to use an 'on board' hardware sequencer.
You would find a PC or Mac software based program much, much easier to navigate (like SONAR, Cubase, Logic etc) That way you can 'see' your whole arrangement in front of you without having to fiddle around with 28 button presses for nested sub-pages etc I used a Korg M1 hardware sequencer for about a week a long time ago and suffered tears of frustration tying to get a semblance of an arrangement up and running. You should upload some of your music so we can hear it. |

I don't know, but the system of my M-50 is quite comfortable... the touch screen is very accesible and the recording process is quite good... I know the software is easier but for me is very complicated to do two things you know, like playing and learning a process in a PC... so, having my workstation wherever like in my bed or in my desk is quite great and not having PC's around... and I do encourage you to try this wonderful touch screen... is very intuitive... the only problem is that I can only record over a SD card... that's why I don't have the recording in my computer yet... but I will post my songs anytime soon... is just that the first one is too improvised... now I will start doing more structured songs... thanks Lain...

Thanks for asking. I still haven't made a serious effort to dig in and learn how to use it yet. It's really difficult when I can just pick up the old acoustic guitar...
However, I'm a bit of a gadgeteer, so I will get around to it sooner or later. Looking forward to checking out your sample. Will stay tuned. Although now that you've mentioned it, I might have to set aside a half hour tonight to fool around with it. Edited by Slartibartfast - May 19 2010 at 18:16 |

Well Guys, is finally here... the song made with the help of the sequencer of my M-50, I have to tell you, it only took my like two hours to record all the keyboard tracks which were 2 for drums, 1 for bass, 2 for strings, 1 for piano, 1 for a lead sound and 1 more for something that I don't remember but it was 7 different lines, and I only added two guitars of my portastudio... so... I will like your comments... thanks...

Common Juan, give us mp3 file. It says I have to register in order to download. Use some filesharing service as many starting artists do :-) (I don't like/use stream) |

I will say this for the Yamaha, if I were stuck waiting at an airport or a hospital emergency room it's really nice and compact and I'd be having a ball while waiting. The keyboard isn't velocity sensitive but like any instrument when you adapt yourself to playing it, it can be a lot of fun.

Hey....wasn't being funny or disrespectful.....Systems Exclusive Data can seriously have you pulling your hair out......especially when you use it with another synth of a different make. QY-100 is XG, right ? Try controlling that with a GS based synth, like a Roland, or Korg.....Sys-Ex is sent when you hit the play button. Trouble IS, GS messages dont mean much to an XG synth.....thats why you get totally unexpected things happening ie: voices changing by (seemingly) themself. This is the world of MSB (Most Significant Byte) and LSB (Least Significant Byte) that kept me on the phone to Yamaha UK for 3.5 years. Prepare for some SERIOUS manual reading.
Hope it goes well for ya.
ps: the QY-100 is velocity sensitive.....the trick IS, to edit with a PC.

And all the hype made it seem like the thing would be so easy. |

Yamaha makes it all seem so easy. After said two pounds of limes and two bottles of Patron, myself, I finally gave in and bought a Yamaha 16-track recorder, and now I do my sequencing the old fashioned way: live, one track at a time. Yes I know, I should learn to use the sequencer, but no sufficient time now, being one of those few people who seems to still have a job here in the USA and the corporate masters seem to think we should work 12 hour days and be happy about it. |
