Vigil and 13th Star are absolutely brilliant. Especially the latter. Fish really came back strong with that one.
I'll have to listen to Sunsets again. Haven't heard it in a while. E |

13th Star is a great album. Field of Crows was also great, but Raingods with Zippos marked the true return to form that we had all been waiting for.

Since this is a pretty open Marillion thread I'm going to ask my fellow fans to help me out a bit. I've enjoyed Marillion since the Fish era and through a good portion of the Hogarth years-especially Season's End, Brave, and Afraid of Sunlight. I know many fans say Marbles is one of the best Hogarth albums, but I don't get it? I listened closely to it again today and found it drab, poppy, not very progressive and unsatisfying. I'm curious to hear what the allure is for this album. I look forward to hearing your feedback! Thanks all.

Hey there Yanch! Welcome to the thread!
Personally, I find Marbles to be a brilliant mix of modern prog, rock and pop, and it has some of my favourite song writing ever. All of the tracks, at least for me, have a really strongly, genuinely emotive sound, particularly Neverland and The Invisible Man. May I ask, do you have the 1CD version or the 2CD version? -Joel |

I have the 1 CD version. I have always liked the emotional quality of Steve Hogarth's vocals, and that definitely comes through on Marbles. Interesting how we all hear things differently. I don't find the writing as interesting at all here.

Well, first of all, I'd say you really should buy the 2disc version, it is marvelous, however...
I felt the same way about Marbles for quite a while, I didn't hate it, but I didn't think it was really good either, so I virutally never listened to it. Nowadays I love it and it is one of my favourites, it just well clicked at some point. I didn't do anything special or something, so I won't be of any use to you here.
You could try listening to it, on a sunnyday (sun blasting through the window!) and turn the volume up quite a bit, so you can enjoy the low bass of Pete's of The Invisible Man, and just run it through (Ocean Cloud is one of the best epics ever written). Now, this is quite the oposite of what you should do with Brave (don't know if you like that one?), cause with Brave you have to listen t it at night preferably outside on an mp3-player or something. With Marbles you should listen to it on a stereo that surrounds you on a hot sunny day!
Have you tried watching some songs from Marbles on live DVD's? That might help to.
Well, it's a bit of a confusing story (I'm no native speaker), but I think you've got the essence of it, right?
Goodluck,
Joren

Thanks. I'll look for the 2 cd set and give it a listen and check out the dvd.. Brave is one of my favorites and night is a good time for listening to it. No worries, you were not confusing!

^One of the tracks which is missing from the 1CD version of Marbles is the epic Ocean Cloud, which really makes the album for me.

Defenitely, I´m watching the early version from the 2003 Weekend on the Marbles on the Road DVD right now: absolutely amazing! Have you seen that one, Joel? The early version from that show of Neverland is particularly good, too!

You absolutely must try out the live versions, Yanch - utterly essential and a very good way of persuading you of the genius of Marbles.
If that doesn't work, there are always, of course, The Knights of the Round Table |
