^ Madonna is exactly what I thought of when I first heard/saw LGG. We must be tired of our old one so we need a new one. Kind of like Batman movies
@ Ivan's post. What is next Jonas Brothers? Demi Lovato? Miley Cyrus? Taylor Swift?

The Teen Queen Girl has been cycling pretty fast, and the script is remarkably the same. It's yet to be seen whether Miley has the drug-soaked burnout but that would be the usual and customary.
Lady Gaga's music and voice even sound a bit like Madonna.
Every stage act has its stars, its themes, etc. Both Madonna and Lady Gaga's are only loosely about music. No visuals, no act. As opposed to a classical orchestra which has very little visually going on (I suppose Gentle Giant would fall in there too). Genesis would be in the middle, as the stage visuals were an important part of their act as well.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

This thread has obviously degenerated *facepalm*
btw, Megan Fox, LGG and Katy Perry are all pretty horrible. There are endless girls I see everyday who are prettier on top of a million million webcam girls who are "sexier" (yes, I have no shame) These hollywoods are all created for mass consumption like ipads and E news. |

But there are some of those pre-fabricated artists who succeed, and those who don't. Give some merit to both Madonna and LG, especially the former, with so many years in the pop world and still on top. LG has succeeded where other have failed. Though how lasting her impact will be is yet to be seen...

As prog fans we have some obligation to resist pre-fabricated music. If anything Prog is on the artistic side of popular music, hence the moniker "art rock" which isn't fully deserved.... I listen to some contrived music, including the contrived music of the prog bands we love (so many greats in the 80s), but I am aware and opposed to what's degenerate in that music. I draw the line when considering vulgar pop music directly created by profit motives. |

I don't. Whatever entertain my ears in a particular moment goes. Of course I have preferences and music that I listen to more than 80% of the time (see my signature for a clue) and prog is just below it but also in the important side. But a 5% of the time I might find myself listening to whatever suits me without having to consider the music's purpose, origins, commercial status and genre.

Lady Gaga is like the Fast and the Furious, candy entertainment. I, for one, sometimes like it. Now the fact that I prefer The Bourne Identity to F&F and Epica to LGG doesn't change the fact that they're both pre-fab acts. It's just entertainment folks. |

If Madonna and Lagy Gaga were only popular for their looks then wouldn't every pop diva be just as big? Why isn't Mandy Moore more popular? Few singers beat her on the hotness scale. If it's so easy to be successful at pop music then why isn't everybody? I mean Gentle Giant were some of the most skilled musicians of their time and they absolutely bombed at mainstream pop.
Truth be told, even if pop has a predominately profit motive. That doesn't make it all crap with no effort put into it. Michael Jackson and Prince for example were genuinely talented performers and songwriters who put passion into what they did. And Madonna, love her or hate her, she's managed to stay on top of the pop music biz for 3 decades and she's the only pop diva who has managed to do that. She's certainly not the best singer or the most attractive, but she has the best songs of the whole lot and weither or not that credit should go to her or her collaborators doesn't matter to me that much.
Granted her use of provocative imagery helped, Gaga does something similar which might be a key to her success. But then again Gaga isn't the only chick with a reputation for crazy over the top costumes (points to avatar) but her music is also very accessible while still sounding at least a little different from all the other pop that's out in full force now. She's a pretty good piano player too. So I can appreciate her even if her music isn't for me. Edited by boo boo - May 13 2010 at 22:15 |

Lady Gaga gets a pass from the critics for being involved in the production of her music and image, whereas Britney Spears for example (and the majority of similar acts) have no involvement or say in either- they are done for her.

When I saw her playing piano in one of her wacky costumes, I thought of Elton John.... As for the lady in your avatar, Bjork is an immense talent, who has never used her sexuality to sell records, but wacky costumes? Yeah maybe...but with these guys, it's more like the toy you get with a cereal, the look is part of the package, not the only thing. |

Bjork never used sexuality? Haha. If it's not "in your face" (and done in a completely different taste) in doesn't
mean it's not there.

"My problem isn't actually with Lady Gaga. But there's not much in her music to distinguish it from other glossy, formulaic pop. She just happens to wear slightly weirder outfits than Britney Spears. But they're not that weird – they're mostly just skimpy. She's fully marketing her body/sexuality; she's just doing it while wearing, like, a 'fierce' telephone hair-hat. Her sexuality has no scuzziness, no frank raunchiness, in the way that, say, Peaches, or even Grace Jones, have – she's Arty Spice! And, meanwhile, she seems to take herself so oddly seriously, the way she talks about her music in the third person, like she's Brecht or something. She just makes me miss Cyndi Lauper." - Joanna Newsom

Bjork can be very sexual but with her it's a sincere form of self expression, she doesn't use it to market herself, she doesn't wear slutty outfits and she has an unusual appearance that isn't that marketable to horny teenage boys.
The sexual content in All is Full of Love is a lot more tasteful and artistic than say... the sexual content in your usual Pussycat Dolls song. Edited by boo boo - May 14 2010 at 16:42 |
