That is exactly why I started this thread. I was hoping that someone here found something I missed. |

I've always quite liked WMP, and gave up on both Real Player and Media Monkey in favour of WMP.
A few people here have mentioned WinAmp - what are the benefits of this, i.e. what do I get that WMP does not do? |

Win Amp plays flac files, whereas WMP doesnt. Unless you download the codec for WMP: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/madFLAC.htm |

I rip with Windows Media player and I rip to two computers currently. I have a Zune so I use that, too. My main gripe with Zune is the lack of information it displays. I've tried WinAmp and whatever the i thing was. Neither of those won me over. Use the Zune for home playback and WMP when I'd like some more information about my music at my fingertips. Can't knock the others though. One other that I am totally drawing a blank on...

What other information do you miss displaying? I have tried them all and Zune software works and looks the best for me. My son has a Sony Walkman and I have been able to sync protected Zune Pass content to it also....So it does not just work with Zune media players.

Currently I use iTunes because of my iPhone. Before that, I was using WMP11, which I loved because of how easy it was to navigate the music library and adjust playlists on the go. I still don't love iTunes but I've got to the point where I can use it pretty well.

Foobar2000 is the one I prefer. I use it set at 24 bits all data lossless and usb digital streamed to an outboard DAC.

Unless I'm missing something, (which is entirely possible) you don't get release year, date of rip, date of last play, etc. I've also fooled around with Realplayer, which is decent, but I've pretty much settled with Zune and WMP. |

Under Collection you can sort for Release Year, A-Z, By Date Added (but it does not show the date, will list in the order you added to your Collection) and By Artist.
If you view by Songs you can choose all the info you are looking for. Right click the row where it says Song, Song Artists..... and "choose columns" shows with much more info you can pick to view.

WMP for music... is just good and did enough for me to enjoy it.
VLC is the real thing for DVDs and whatever video file you have... I do recomend it for anything...
Ocasionally I used Nero's Showtime... but is not that great... the outfit is cool and that's it...

Seconded! I don't want my player to be 'updated', to search for 'media library', to show 'three-stars rating' or any such crap...I want to open a file, and I want that player to chew it regardless of .mp3, .wav, .ogg, or any other format. I know where are my folders and files and how are they organized!! Cool Edit/Adobe Audition (it's not a player, but an audio processing software) is able to digest .txt files, old Amiga .iff files...in fact, you can load any data (.jpg if you want) and it will interpret it as hiss. That's all I'm asking from a player. |

Winamp with the MAD input plugin for MP3s (decoding in 24bit), and the ASIO plugin for playback. I use Winamp's media library to organise my collection, disabling it if I'm just playing random files and don't need it cluttering my screen. Foobar isn't bad but I never could get its user interface looking how I wanted. I also use XMplay for mod files and Yamaha XGworks for midi files, and Sound Forge for editing.

Well I use Windows Media Player and it doesnt do any of that for me because I dont let it. I also change which fields it shows and I dont see any "star ratings" or other rubbish. My biggest issue with media player is that it is slow to start up compared to other apps. |

Winamp for FLAC's (There's also a free, very clever way using Winamp to convert FLAC's to WMV's for free in about 3 seconds per track.), iTunes for everything else.
I used to use Foobar but I don't really use it much anymore. |

Used to use WMP, now I always use Winamp. I like the amount of available plugins and skins for it, plus it supports 24-bit audio.

VLC is the least intrusive, but I use winamp for audio- I love milkdrop at full screen mode. I also like how you can minimize it to just a strip when you don't want the visualisation running
VLC I use exclusively for video- so much control in one little package. VLC is also the package I use for conversion (any format, any type of media)- it seems to produce the best result and also has the most control over the result you want to produce.
