What is your favorite media player application for your progressive collection? I seem to always return to to iTunes, but I have spent time with winamp and foobar 2000. Winamp used to be a small application, but it is now about the same as iTunes.

Media Player on Windows 7 corrupted the meta data of some of my MP3 files. It is nice, but I do not trust it. I think iTunes is the most trustworthy, but it is a bloated pig that installs a bunch of extra stuff that I do not want.
If you use Winamp, state if you purchased the Pro version or just use the free player. I love how iTunes burns MP3 CDs for the car, and I would have to buy Pro winamp to have the same burning speed.

I use Winamp now because my new computer's Windows Media Player don't play my Napster tracks, damnit. Anyhow now I'm suitably impressed by Winamp and believe I prefer it. I used Windows Media Player in its various incarnations since I was a little boy. Say regularly from when I got my own computer until March? 2002-2010.

I rip with Windows Media player and I rip to two computers currently. I have a Zune so I use that, too. My main gripe with Zune is the lack of information it displays. I've tried WinAmp and whatever the i thing was. Neither of those won me over. Use the Zune for home playback and WMP when I'd like some more information about my music at my fingertips. Can't knock the others though. One other that I am totally drawing a blank on...

Currently I use iTunes because of my iPhone. Before that, I was using WMP11, which I loved because of how easy it was to navigate the music library and adjust playlists on the go. I still don't love iTunes but I've got to the point where I can use it pretty well.

Unless I'm missing something, (which is entirely possible) you don't get release year, date of rip, date of last play, etc. I've also fooled around with Realplayer, which is decent, but I've pretty much settled with Zune and WMP.

Under Collection you can sort for Release Year, A-Z, By Date Added (but it does not show the date, will list in the order you added to your Collection) and By Artist.
If you view by Songs you can choose all the info you are looking for. Right click the row where it says Song, Song Artists..... and "choose columns" shows with much more info you can pick to view.

Seconded!
I don't want my player to be 'updated', to search for 'media library', to show 'three-stars rating' or any such crap...I want to open a file, and I want that player to chew it regardless of .mp3, .wav, .ogg, or any other format. I know where are my folders and files and how are they organized!!
Cool Edit/Adobe Audition (it's not a player, but an audio processing software) is able to digest .txt files, old Amiga .iff files...in fact, you can load any data (.jpg if you want) and it will interpret it as hiss. That's all I'm asking from a player.

Winamp with the MAD input plugin for MP3s (decoding in 24bit), and the ASIO plugin for playback. I use Winamp's media library to organise my collection, disabling it if I'm just playing random files and don't need it cluttering my screen. Foobar isn't bad but I never could get its user interface looking how I wanted. I also use XMplay for mod files and Yamaha XGworks for midi files, and Sound Forge for editing.

VLC is the least intrusive, but I use winamp for audio- I love milkdrop at full screen mode. I also like how you can minimize it to just a strip when you don't want the visualisation running
VLC I use exclusively for video- so much control in one little package. VLC is also the package I use for conversion (any format, any type of media)- it seems to produce the best result and also has the most control over the result you want to produce.

WMP, since it has just about the right combination of style and substance. The organization is clear and spot on, with everything that needs to be there and nothing that appears intrusive.
To me, iTunes looks like a boring spreadsheet and WinAmp tends to look as cluttered and unappealing as the international space station.

Winamp. Simple, easy, customizable, pays everything I've ever wanted to play, always scrobbles when I want it to. It almost never becomes and "unresponsive program," too. I guess I use WMP to rip CDs, but other than that it's too bulky and unnecessary. People said Foobar was great, so I downloaded it. There's wasn't any reason to. It's basically Winamp but called another program. Just...unnecessary.

The secret of foobar is in the customization. The bare version is only good as a lite player (very little resources needed and minimal design) that supports most audio formats (flac, ape, ogg, musepack, aac, mp4, etc.)
However, with my customized foobar I can: - rip CDs - encode from any format to another - do multitagging / access freedb / edit tag types - process replay-gain - display art / search and download art - schedule a computer start up + playback start in the morning at the preferred hour - scrobble directly to last.fm without installing their software
and I've only got to about 20% of its potential (and available components).

Windows Media Player CANNOT handle multi disc albums. It will order the tracks ignoring the Disc: 1 1, 2 2, 3 3, 4 4, etc. This is the only reason I cannot use it. I buy double albums on Amazon MP3 and iTunes, and Windows Media Player does not offer the feature. The only way around it is to retag all the double albums. In fairness to WMP, it is completely silly that downloaded albums are separated by Discs anyways.

Mine separates the discs. If I want to have them all as a continuous piece, I renumber the tracks on the discs after the first one. A bit of trouble, but it works. I don't do downloads if I can avoid it, which is most of the time. Give me hard copies or give me death!!!

I had that problem, the usual way to solve it (annoying) was to renumber the tracks as so:
101 - disc 1 track 1 102 - disc 1 track 2 ... 201 - disc 2 track 1
etc.
|

I ended up renumbering them like you suggest with 3 digits. Thanks! One thing I noticed was that I had to remove them from iTunes and add them again so that the gapless playback would work.

It will read anything. Unfortunately i haven't found a way to store anything with it or make a playlist.
I gotta say itunes is the easiest to use. It's built to manage a large collection very well. I'd like to see a parametric EQ feature, but you can pump volume levels if needed.

I played with VLC briefly. It was a decent if you have a capable computer drive that didn't come with the software to decode surround sound. I was in desperation for something to make surround sound happen on this PC and that was the first free solution I came across. It behaved a little skippy when pausing, but did the job.
These days for basic playing on a computer I like winamp with a lyrics plug in. I still rip with Windows Media Player. And I use the Zune software for playlists and interface with the player.

I just downloaded MusicBee and I have to say I'm lovin' it. Some features: -iPod Syncing. Yes, it can sync with your iPod (as long as it's below iOS 4, but I have a NaNo so that doesn't matter). In addition, it'll automatically convert the files in your library to an iPod friendly format when you sync it, so you can keep all of your music in FLAC form and still sync it to your iPod if you wish. -Internet Radio. It has the ability to play a whole bunch of internet radio stations (including Last.fm) from the client. This is great for me, since I sometimes have no idea what to listen to, so I can just fire up the radio. -Mini player. Most media players have a mini player, but MusicBee's is nice because you can anchor it to the top or bottom of your screen and then set it to minimize to that. -Now Playing Playlists! I really like this feature, personally. If you've used Grooveshark you may have an idea of how this works. Basically you can add queue songs of your choice to your Now Playing playlist and they'll play one after another, but the playlist doesn't save like making an actual playlist. I honestly have no idea why all media players don't have this feature, it's really nice. -Audio DJ. A sort of Pandora-like feature that makes an instant infinite playlist of music in your library similar to the song you choose and then plays it. -More info. Artist info, automatically downloaded album art and lyrics, and such. -It's also just generally better laid out and more customizable than iTunes. -And it's free. :) -There's also a bunch of organization features and stuff that I haven't really explored.
I realize this sounds like an advertisement, but I'm just impressed with the software and it seems like a very nice iTunes alternative/improvement. Also has plugin support, so it can only get better.

Yup. I really love foobar. It's so damn light and customizable.
I have the iPod plugin so I don't need iTunes anymore.
Speaking of that, what's the best music player for Linux? I don't really like using VLC to play music.

I had a Creative Zen, then a Toshiba Gigabeat, and now a Zune. The other two croaked on me. I mainly use the Zune player software for putting together playlists.

Winamp plays most types of file, but I do not like the layout. Windows Media Player is well laid out, but there are files it will not play. Although I have used Media Monkey for some time and it will convert files, I still find it a bit confusing and itunes is not intuitive to me. So, I'll give this a try.

I use iTunes to organize the music and sync it to any of the multiple iPods my family use (we have 4 - my 160Gb Classic and three 8Gb Nano's, one each for the kids and the wife) and because you need iTunes to sync up my iPhone and iPad.
I would never play the music on a computer though as the sound quality is so terrible! either listen on the iPod with high quality noise cancelling headphones or connect the iPod to the home theater system and listen through proper speakers. Usually though I'll play the CD's or DVD-a's on the home system and connect the iPod in the Car.

Agree.....for me swap out iTunes and insert Zune. Listening to music on a computer is a throwback to the old AM radio hand held days.....

Primarily MOC or cmus (depending on what I can get to build on whatever Unixy system I'm using). Foobar on Winders!
MOC is great for SSHing into a computer in another room of the house and startling the occupants with some suitably obnoxious 80s pop.

I've got three currently running and have different stuff queued up in each buzzing around through my music collection.

Well I never listened to music on one of those things. I did have a decent mono AM/FM radio when I was a kid. My next device was a portable record player with speakers unit. It was pretty cool. I listened to my first prog music on the thing. In fact I was using it regularly when I first got into prog.

I think I had something like that also.....purchased from Montgomery Wards, all-in-one stereo console!
I suppose if you run your computer thru a DAC connected to your hi-fi system it can sound pretty damn good, I have demo some of that, but I have no interest in connecting my computer to my stereo.

Aww man, it was the best. I'm still trying to run down a pic because I don't remember the model. Not really hi-fi but...

^ Nice slarti! I think this one is way before "vintage" audio gear! I'll have to search for a pic of mine, if I can remember what it looked like

Mine was this style, but instead of cassette player mine had 8-track player/recorder....My father bought me a Superscope cassette deck as a "separate" component, and I thought I was all that dude!!
The system had 20" tall full range speakers and the turntable was fully automatic, with stackable vinyl spindle.
Unfortunately our house got broken into and all was stolen....with insurance money my father bought me a nicer setup with separate turntable, but still had 8-track deck!! It was cool had the dbl VU meters and one Tape In.

A cassette deck and a tuner, way cool. An 8-track built in instead eh?
Not only that but I see the cassette there had a counter. Note also the vu meter...
I graduated to a used Dual turn table that was in a wood box. My cassette deck was a DBX unit (went through two). My receiver had a long life and survived a house fire (the Dual did not fortunately the LPs were at my college apartment), I think it was a Marantz or Technics . Don't remember the speaker model but they were big and heavy. None of that bass cube nonsense.
The turntable in my pic had 4 speeds. I think mine may have had 3. It could play 33-1/3, 45, and 78. What in the hell is the fourth speed on that thing?
