Boys learn about manhood from men -- if there's no dad, then there's the drug dealer on the corner, the misogynist "gangsta" rapper, or the macho, gun-toting stereotype on TV.
If "dad' abandoned mom as soon as her belly swelled, then she's not likely to speak well of him, or even of men in general....
Nature knew what she was doing when she decided that it took the two sexes joining together to make babies.
And yes, i know there are exceptional single moms, lesbian moms, etc -- but all else being equal, I believe kids, especially boys, benefit best from two caring parents, male & female. That's just how the human race works. We need to work together, and bring our gender-specific strengths and qualities to the equation of making new, balanced humans, with each sex respecting, valuing and learning from the other. ![]() Edited by Peter - April 29 2010 at 22:11 |

Wow this thing changed. From are cops okay to a reflection different countries social attitudes and makeups to single parents and absent fathers. I suppose they are related. I even saw Finnforest mention Amber (thanks).
I don't know any of the real answers nor claim to. Maybe in the US our urban areas are too jungle like and the people that seem to be forced to live there. People become predators and victims way to easy in that environment. Maybe we have too much divergence of cultures forced to share the same space. Maybe guns are bad but only bad people seem to get them. Maybe we need to legalize pot and change the war on drugs to we can take the teeth out of the mobsters wallet. Maybe we need to put real felons who hurt people in jail and keep them there and the ones that don't try to help not the other way around. Maybe money spent in the justice system needs to be non politicized and special interests need to be eliminated so real Justice can see the light of day. There are a lot things that may work but probably sadly never see the light of day. Could we at least try them and see? BTW Slarty are your wrists chaffed? How are you man?

So, once again, we can blame the French
![]() Interesting note that gun-control in the UK only really started at the end of the Napoleonic wars when thousands of British citizens returned home armed to the teeth, while that law didn't prevent people form owning guns, it did make it an offence to carry one with felonious intent (mainly poaching). Throughout the history of the UK, the main reason that the common man wanted a weapon for was to feed his family and the purpose of any form of control was to safe-guard the Landed Gentry's deer, grouse, pheasant, rabbit etc. Aside from Northern Ireland, we're not a nation that wants a gun for self-defence and that as a justification has been "illegal" since 1937.
While I understood that the root of the "right to bear arms" lies within the history of the formation of the USA, as an outsider I did puzzle over the need to perpetuate this into the 21st Century, 150+ years after a truely patriotic govenment of the people by the people had been established, any threat of invasion could be handled by a standing army/navy/airforce and internal law enforcement was completely under the control of that government and its duly elected representatives. It is the various posts and threads on Gun Control on this forum over the passed 3 years that have educated and enlightened me on this, and while I can follow the logic of the reasons given, it does not mean I accept them as being something that cannot be changed.
It does seem to me that based on the views of various American posters here, fear is still a major factor in the desire to maintain this right, eventhough the same fears, (and conditions for those fears to arise), are present in every other country in the world.
The situation in the UK was not a step-change, but a gradual process over 300 years of legislation. People have rightly pointed out that you can't ban guns and expect the criminal population to fall in line, but as Alex said, smaller actions can be taken that over time will have an effect. Resisting those changes because they will ultimately lead to a total ban on guns is not a reason in itself - the UK, Canada and Europe have not completely banned guns and you can still legally own one if you so desire. I cannot claim that the UK is a perfect system, we haven't rooted out or fixed any of those problems that lead to violence, we still have crime, drugs, poverty, domestic abuse, racial tension, gangs and murder, we've just made it harder for firearms to be a factor.

Here it is Friday and I still don't know if it's safe to drive my truck around town. The county where I reported it stolen to says I have to contact the county it was towed to. The authorities with that county haven't returned my calls.
![]() I did take an chance and drive it back from the office yesterday. No police cars got behind me on the way to the apartment. Took my wife's car in to work this morning just to be on the safe side. I've had enough excitement for one week. Come to think of it probably enough excitement for the whole year. ![]() |

I was thinking we should hijack this thread to that damn Genesis I can't get out of my head. ![]() "They done me wrong, it's the same old song..." This is good: Teacher's car stolen, tricked out, returned 3 years later Excerpt:
Amanda Pogany's once-humble white 1996
Honda Accord
was returned to her drag-race ready, with a brand-new
"When I first saw under the hood I thought
it
looked like, you know in the movie 'Grease?' Like the 'Grease Lightning'
car,"
The eighth-grade teacher was shocked when she picked up her long-lost vehicle in the Red Hook impound lot this month. The previous "owner" souped up the Accord,
putting
in a manual transmission and leather interior and hanging

I actually like the way this thread has been careening.
![]() It would be rather boring if it didn't. Just so you all (y'all) will know I seriously did not make up the incident.
In the Chamblee and Doraville and Decatur area of Georgia we have a diverse population and diverse police forces as well. Edited by Slartibartfast - April 30 2010 at 23:20 |
