The Marillion Round Table

I'll try not to bore everyone by my eternal recollections of the 1980's and what I call the 2nd wave of prog, or what we now know as neo-prog.

Marillion were by no means on their own at the time. IQ, Twelfth Night, Pallas, and a number of other bands also emerged at the time.

I actually think that Marillion acheived pre-eminence amongst them for two reasons. Obviously, there was the quality of the songwriting and performances, but also the matter of a large Scottish man by the name of Derek W Dick. He simply towered over all others, both literally and figuratively. The media honed in on him, and they wrote and had hit singles as well.

That should not, though, diminish the importance of the others. Pallas especially were big sellers at the time, and I believe that IQ are amongst the finest prog bands of all time. The Seventh House is especially an immense album, but I really do think that they have matured incredibly well with the release of Dark Matter & Frequency, both of which easily appear in my top 10 of the last decade.

I love Marillion, as all users of this thread know (), but they were one (albeit the pick) of many fine bands from that era who still write and perform great music. I would also point out that they were THE bands who kept us prog fans going through what was acknowledged as a very difficult time for the genre.

I think that "A Voice From The Past" is one of their best songs (I Love that song!)
