Haha, yes, well agree with you on the point that IQ are not as elegant as Marillion, but definitely a very good band. I´ve always thought Subterranea´s a very good album, but it strechtes a bit too much, it´s a bit too long, IMO. Dark Matter is a fine album, IMO, with "Harvest of Souls", of course, as the absolute climax! but the rest of the songs haven't stayed with me, aren't very memorable to me - but, since you've mentioned it, I will relisten it right now (I usually skip the first 4 songsEmbarrassed). I think Ever and The Seventh House are their best: fantastic compositions, outstanding music complementation by the vocals, moody melodies - no filling passages! Their latest record is a fine album as well; better than the first two mentioned, but a little less good than the last two albums mentioned, IMO.

By the way, I don't know whether you'll use them, but just so you know:
"Vrede zij met u allen" is the Dutch translation (I'm Dutch!Big smile)
"Friede sei mit Ihnen allen" is the German translation

I'll try not to bore everyone by my eternal recollections of the 1980's and what I call the 2nd wave of prog, or what we now know as neo-prog.

Marillion were by no means on their own at the time. IQ, Twelfth Night, Pallas, and a number of other bands also emerged at the time.

I actually think that Marillion acheived pre-eminence amongst them for two reasons. Obviously, there was the quality of the songwriting and performances, but also the matter of a large Scottish man by the name of Derek W Dick. He simply towered over all others, both literally and figuratively. The media honed in on him, and they wrote and had hit singles as well.

That should not, though, diminish the importance of the others. Pallas especially were big sellers at the time, and I believe that IQ are amongst the finest prog bands of all time. The Seventh House is especially an immense album, but I really do think that they have matured incredibly well with the release of Dark Matter & Frequency, both of which easily appear in my top 10 of the last decade.

I love Marillion, as all users of this thread know (Wink), but they were one (albeit the pick) of many fine bands from that era who still write and perform great music. I would also point out that they were THE bands who kept us prog fans going through what was acknowledged as a very difficult time for the genre.

Thanks Joren for the translation. I think I'll add the German one when I get a chance. I should probably also credit Robert Fripp with his "Peace-A Theme" , from In The Wake Of Poseidon Smile  Now you have me listening to Subterranea this morning...Yes, it goes on a bit, but it does have some of their best playing. My first IQ album was The Seventh House, so I have a soft spot for it as well.

Sure Steve!

So, find the image URL, say it's this picture of Script's album art: http://www.indirrahatla.com/siteimages/marillion-forgotten-sons.jpg

What you need to do it type this up:

(IMG)(/IMG)

And place the url in between the two IMG fields, like this:

(IMG)http://www.indirrahatla.com/siteimages/marillion-forgotten-sons.jpg(/IMG)

Replace the rounded ( brackets with square [ brackets on the respective sides of the IMG parts, and then hit the post button and it should show up!
Hope that makes sense

So then the end result will look like this:

What? You`re not going to use the Dutch(Heart!) one?Cry Haha, ok, I understand 23 million native speakers versus 105 million native speakersWink
About, Subterranea, I think you are absolutely right: it consists of good through very good to excellent passages only! And it being to long, is not always so to me: when I'm in the right mood I love it. However when I'm in a different mood, I love it too, but my attention escapes the album in the end. (Haha, this is a bit confusingly written)

You can upload to it a site like this one:

http://imageshack.us/
That one is probably the easiest to use, you don't need to sign up to use it.

Ok, here's one from the Archives. In my 1983 Steve Hacket tour programme. Who'd have thunk Ian's middle name was "Francesco ?

Here is my story: (condensed)
I have been a fan since I first heard ""Misplaced Childhood"Smile
When I heard that album, I flipped!; played it ALL the time (I was hooked!)
Went out & bought "Script" & "Fugazi" . This was THE BAND for me!
People would say "Oh, they are just a Genesis clone" but not to me they weren't.
Nobody was better than Marillion! I saw them every chance I could.Smile

So then comes 1988 & the news that Fish has left the band. Oh God! Oh No!
My favorite is no moreCry! I was devastated!

The band settles on Steve Hogarth as the new voice of Marillion & I think No Way! No One can replace
the ""gilled" one!  Marillion is over.....

Well, HOW WRONG I WAS!   "h" is brilliant! & now I never listen to any of the Fish records, BUT, "Brave" (my personal favorite album of ALL time by ANY artist!) is always in "heavy " rotation along with "AOS" .

Steve Hogarth is the greatest! He has wrote (with the help of the band, of course) SO many masterpieces!

I hope someday to attend a convention (now THAT would be Heaven)

Marillion: I love you! Wink

Well, nice to see you here Clepsydra, though, may I ask, why your name, if Marillion is "THE BAND", is Clepsydra?Embarrassed  LOL
Anyway, welcome to this humble forum of ours, hope to read a lot more from you. Since you're here: Lazland had come up with this wunderful idea to list your favourite song from every Marillion album and after that to give a brief explanation of why you like that song so much, and we've all written our list (you can read them about 10-12 pages back, or something). Could you make one for us too, so as we can see where your preferences lie? Smile

The only song I can't quite get into is "The Last Century For Man". Everybody detests "Most Toys", but I like the tune.

Guilty! Love that album (does not like "Most Toys")
I think that "A Voice From The Past" is one of their best songs (I Love that song!)
