 Topic: Are you prog only? Or do you like prog metal?

I've noticed on this site that there seems to be a lot of proggers who only enjoy classic prog, like Yes, Crimson, Floyd, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. Anything with a touch of metal is looked upon with suspicion.
For me, and I'm sure many others, I discovered prog through listening to Dream Theater, Opeth, etc. These modern bands are a great gateway drug into the older stuff.
So, are you into straight up prog; prog/metal crossover, or both?

I enjoy "straight-up prog", prog-folk, etc. Prog metal I enjoy provided it does NOT have death growls. Not fond of the cookie monster. But I like some Opeth, some Dream Theater, After Forever, Lacrimosa, Pain of Salvation -- anything with some feeling and melody, and again, no cookie monsters.

Haven't really gotten into prog metal... or metal at all. I like Tool and Primus, but I usually just can't stand metal. I enjoy pretty much every other genre on this sight except for prog-metal. I'm going to try to get more open to it, but it just hasn't clicked with me so far.

I love classic prog, and I love a lot of straight ahead metal, but prog metal is, to my ears, mostly self indulgent nonsense devoid of originality or strong compositions. Opeth is okay, and I like Mastodon a lot, but bands like Dream Theater and Shadow Gallery do nothing for me.

I'm not real big on prog metal, so I guess you could call me a 'straight up' kinda guy. I do listen to some of the genre, however, such as Dream Theater and Rush. Symphonic Prog and Prog-Folk are my mainstays.

I have two prog metal albums by bands that have been active since the 80s (Queensryche and DT), but I just can't stand the cliches and samey sounding modern gloss of this genre. I'll take prog from 70s and the 80s over the claptrap being issues these days. As for metal... its all been done before and since cookie monster vocals seem to be the biggest innovation of the past 20 years I count myself out of this goofy game.

I got into prog via Pink Floyd, but even before that I liked some metal, which has grown on me too. When I found about DT and prog-metal, well it was real cool to have them both mixed... and as a matter of fact, metal seems a rather natural evolution of prog.

I started out listening to prog when I was a little kid because my dad listened to some prog bands like Jethro Tull and Yes, but at the time I didn't know what prog even was I just thought it was good music. I really didn't discover what progressive music was until my guitar teacher made me listen to Dream Theater and from that point on I liked prog rock/metal. Its kinda a curse really.

I must say that prog metal rather doesn't especially affect me. First I love the great 70's oldschool prog era, second - its 80's neo-continuation. I respect 'modern' prog sound too - especially symphonic.

Used to be a big metal fan, not knowing or caring that a lot of what I listened to was labelled prog metal. Not so much these days, when I prefer classic metal and some selected power/speed metal and thrash metal bands for my dose of the harder stuff.
However, good prog-rock is so much more than classic prog and good prog is so much more than prog-ROCK. And good music is so much more than good prog

I may like some progressive or post-metal as long as it is kept clean of death-metal growls. Tech/Extreme Prog Metal is, generally spoken, not my cup of tea.

I was raised a metalhead, so I obviously enjoy a lot prog-metal. Actually, I listen to a lot of different things, even though progressive rock and prog-metal amount to 70-80% of it.

I was also raised a metalhead, then from that got more and more into progmetal, thinking that was the best thing ever created, then found this site, and discovered all manner of older gems that werent metal in the slightest. So i love both 'classic prog' and prog metal. However I agree that some prog metal is a bit self indulgent for me, like DT
