Sheik.... A mile over Zoot
Les mains, les pieds balancés
Sur tant de mers, tant de planchers,
Un marin mort,
Il dormira

I like both albums. Zoot Allures is fun because it's close to a "two man" effort between Frank and Terry Ted. However, I think that the songs sound better live than they did on the album. Sheik was my first, and I think it's incredible. So, it's that one. I like Zappa when he tries a little harder (see Lather) but the guy was an exceptional songwriter and wrote great rock songs.

Sheik for the sake of the profanity. LOL
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Both are essential, but I think that Sheik has blown a few more minds.

Sheik Yerbouti - it's got more meat on it.

Sheik Yerbouti. Though I could nearly vote Zoot Allures just for Black Napkins.

A vote for Zoot from someone who has only heard Zoot.

So why did I vote? Because it was the first Zappa album that struck a chord with me so it deserves an honorable mention.
I'm now working my way down through his discography. That will be a big part of my 2010 fun I guess.

I've always had a soft spot for Zoot Allures. I bought it in 1976 and it was the first Zappa album I owned, Of course he's done much better but the instrumental tracks are all great and Disco Boy is fun. City Of Tiny Lites is probably my favourite track between the 2 albums but overall i find Sheik Yerbouti patchy.

I actually like Sheik Yerbouti - Adrian Belew, Ed Mann and Terry Bozzio all turn in excellent performances, there are 3 killer FZ live guitar solos and some of the best vocal harmonies FZ ever recorded. Some of the humour wears a bit thin, but overall it's one of Zappa's best efforts IMO. Zoot Allures is much patchier, although it certainly has its moments as others have pointed out. Sheik Yerbouti it is!
