These albums are kind of at the bottom of my FZ list. Zoot Allures has about two essential instrumentals, a decent instrumental and a fun dumb rock song (Wind Up Working at a Gas Station). The rest is a throwaway effort. Sheik Yerbouti is consistent, but its rarely amazing. It does have Bobby Brown Goes Down, though. And it was the first FZ I ever bought.

Sheik Yerbouti it is.

Sheik Yerbuti it's quite a strong record . I didn't expect it to be that good. Musimundo offered 7 of Zappa's strongest albums so far , I hope they release some more in the future.
On the other hand Zoot Allures I find it to be pretty inconsistent : Great guitar playing among some filler.

Sheik by a fair margin. Though Wind Up Working...is one of my favorite FZ songs.

The reason I chose bothWink

And I agree about Zoot Allures, Black Napkins and the title track are killer instrumental stuff, Friendly Little Finger and The Torture Never Stops are really good, but the rest are mediocre throwaways. However I do not find Sheik Yerbouti to be enjoyable in the least, with the exception of City of Tiny Lites and the outstanding Yo' Mama, the rest is forgettable and even annoying.

Zoot Allures it is.

I'm going to have to go with Zoot Allures, but neither is that high up there. Make a Jazz Noise Here and Zappa in New York have way better versions of Black Napkins and The Torture Never Stops (respectively), and those are the two best off Zoot. Sheik Yerbouti has some good ones, but it also has way too much crap to really keep me entertained the whole way through. Both are three star albums, in my opinion. I think. I might be confused. Wink

I agree that Make A Jazz Noise Here has a great version of Black Napkins, but from The Torture Never Stops I prefer the simpler but more solid studio version to Zappa in New York's version.

It was the first song by Zappa that totally grabbed me, that was 2 years ago I presume.

The Zoot version of The Torture Never Stops has that horrific, obnoxious screaming thing all throughout it. I much prefer it sans wailing.

Ugh, certainly a tough one.  Like others here, I don't  find these albums to be bad but hardly favorites at all.  I'm voting for Sheik though if I'm honest with myself I probably listen to Zoot the more often of the two.

Sheik Yerbouti, although Zoot is a very good album as well.

I prefer Sheik. I actually think The Torture Never Stops is one of the worst tracks from FZ's catalogue. Never understood why it was such a favorite live.

Zoot has its moments (many of them), but Sheik is awesome FZ.  So many excellent songs, I'd list them one by one, but that'd be redundant, since the track listing is available on the site here.

"Sheik Yerbouti" is one of the most boring Zappa albums. "Zoot Allures" certainly is not one of his best efforts either, but it has good instrumentals like "Black Napkins". but the highlight of the album is "The Torture Never Stops". believe it or not, that song is one of my Zappa favorites. so my vote goes to "Zoot Allures"

Pretty much my thoughts Clap Though would also add the title track(Zoot Allures) being one of the highlights from the album.

I like both albums. Zoot Allures is fun because it's close to a "two man" effort between Frank and Terry Ted. However, I think that the songs sound better live than they did on the album. Sheik was my first, and I think it's incredible. So, it's that one. I like Zappa when he tries a little harder (see Lather) but the guy was an exceptional songwriter and wrote great rock songs.

Both are essential, but I think that Sheik has blown a few more minds.

Sheik Yerbouti - it's got more meat on it.

Sheik Yerbouti. Though I could nearly vote Zoot Allures just for Black Napkins.

A vote for Zoot from someone who has only heard Zoot.

So why did I vote? Because it was the first Zappa album that struck a chord with me so it deserves an honorable mention.
I'm now working my way down through his discography. That will be a big part of my 2010 fun I guess.

I've always had a soft spot for Zoot Allures. I bought it in 1976 and it was the first Zappa album I owned, Of course he's done much better but the instrumental tracks are all great and Disco Boy is fun. City Of Tiny Lites is probably my favourite track between the 2 albums but overall i find Sheik Yerbouti patchy.

I actually like Sheik Yerbouti - Adrian Belew, Ed Mann and Terry Bozzio all turn in excellent performances, there are 3 killer FZ live guitar solos and some of the best vocal harmonies FZ ever recorded. Some of the humour wears a bit thin, but overall it's one of Zappa's best efforts IMO. Zoot Allures is much patchier, although it certainly has its moments as others have pointed out. Sheik Yerbouti it is!
