Personally, I've seen rather enough "Best Album" / "Best Band" of the seventies threads.  How many times can we debate the differences between Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd.

On the other hand, I think we need more threads about marmosets.

Maybe we should make this thread a guideline for the newbies?

Great, let's make new members so nervous about posting that we only hear from the same old members over and over again.

What do you expect new members to do, read every single thread ever started on the site before they post anything? It seems like people get annoyed far too easily. A symptom of being on the internet too much is when the frustrations of daily life start to get taken out on anonymous strangers online. If someone starts a thread that does not interest you, or even annoys you, guess what? You don't have to read it! Start a discussion that interests you.

It's like going to a party, sticking your nose in other people's conversations, and then getting annoyed if it doesn't interest you.

Here's a guideline for newbies: ignore the bitter and cynical old farts, talk about music, share, learn, and enjoy yourselves.

Let anyone start any thread they wish.

It's the internet,as long as knowone breaks PA rules.Just put up with it.Newbies may find it fun to talk about this stuff.

I'm more bored of reading senior members telling newbies their thread sucks then the threads themselves. If it's a bad thread, let it die on it's own.You can't restrict  discussions because you find them boring.

Any thread that mentions one or all of the following word:

Atheism
Agnostic
Religion
God

But, in truth it seems to me that threads that get done too often tend to die out naturally.

So post anything you like the dafter the better!
Thumbs Up

Clap Like I said it's the internet.

I wouldn't use it if it were full of boring mundane everyday events. We all know were better people after seeing two girls one cup.

Suggest new bands and artists: A Perfect Circle, The Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork or those artists who have been suggested and rejected several times....

Yeah, it beats being having the crap kicked out of you to join a gang. Wink  (I believe the term is jumped in)

Actually, all I want is for new members to use search and add their wisdom to any existing thread.

I've been thinking we could have a "PA Rejects" category for rejected artists/bands. (and perhaps one for those that were just unaccepted over a long time called "Lost in the Shuffle").  That would be fun.  It could even have subcategories such as "Shockingly unprog", "Most Laughable Suggestions", "Kinda Prog" (but not Prog enough in our opinion), "Bounce" for those that got bounced around teams but were ultimately dismissed", and "Limbo Prog" (agreed it was Prog but couldn't reach a consensus on which sub-genre it would best fit) and  "WTF is this?"

No, but they can go search the forum's archives for old discussions which might contain the information they're looking for. This isn't one of those forums where a thread gets deleted after a couple of months.

As for the question posed by the thread starter? I'd be more than happy to see a moratorium on threads whining about how progressive rock isn't as popular as it was in the early 1970s, and discussions of exactly what progressive rock is. Odds are high that'd result in the posting shrinking to a third of its current, but hey... quality above quantity, isn't that what they say?

I think asking a visitor to check out what has been discussed previously is a bit much. That's like walking into a big party and being told that before you start any conversation with anyone, find out what has been mentioned by whom and whether there is still anything left to say.
Unless,of course, someone is proposing to set up an easy to use user-friendly index referencing all subjects. The search function isn't always helpful , ex. who is better Bach Beethoven or Bachman Turner Overdrive ? vs is Bach better than Beethoven or even Bachman Turner Overdrive ? Or = why aren't BTO here ?

Yeah, I don't buy the b.s. about searching for threads before starting one. As debrewguy pointed out, they weren't involved in the old thread...the point is being in a discussion, and being in one that is current, not just making sure it's been discussed...the forum is a place to interact, there are plenty of areas of PA that are databases designed to store unique bits of data.

Any poll that does not have Frank Zappa as an option. Answering Frank Zappa on any prog related poll is like answering Jesus any time in Sunday school--even if it's not the answer they're looking for, no one can really tell you you're wrong.

Any thread suggesting Faith No More that gets shot down in two posts, especially if there are any comparisons to the Beastie Boys.

Any "polls" in the polls section that require you to actually answer rather than simply clicking on an option. Seriously, who has time to type out which one they prefer?

Wink
