*maybe can be linked to in Just For Fun because it is meant to be good-natured, but there's also a serious side to it*

Some examples of thread titles we don't need to see more of... please add your own:

"Is It Just Me Or Are Dream Theater Overrated?"

"I Just Relistened To Close To The Edge"

"I'm Having Real Difficulties Ranking Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme and Selling England By The Pound"

*Obligatory mention of "PF/Camel is/not Prog" threads*  You have formed your own opinion on a certain band, that's great, but it is not a revelation that merits it's own thread.

I actually haven't seen a Yes vs Genesis poll in a while. I would prefer it if we never spoke of PT again and they left as mysteriously as they arrived, leaving no trace behind.

Also, people need to stop complaining that famous album whatever is terrible or not music.

1.  "What's so special about [insert band/ artist name here]?"

2. How do I get into {insert band/ artist name here}?"  Listen to the music, and if that doesn't do it for you, listen to something else.  Some day you may come back to it and get it, but don't then start a new thread on how you finally got it..

3. "I finally get {whatever band or album}!"  It's not cool to admit that you're slow.

4.  "I got into {insert band/ artist name here} but now I've gone off it.  How do I get back into it!  Plzzz help!!!"

5.  "I still can't get back into it" or "I still can't get it."

6.  "Is it me? Or does this just really suck?"

7.  "I have just realized that so-and-so sucks!"

8. "My [pretend] girlfriend loves [my] Tool!"

9. "I can't get my [pretend] girlfriend into Tool. CryCry"

10. "My grandma hates Tool! Angry"

11. "My [pretend] friend thinks that Prog sucks and is total crap, and this makes me really angry [please share your outrage at my invisible friend even if I made it up]."

12.  "I was talking about {insert band here} with my girlfirend [really an inflatable doll] and she said that she thought {insert band name here} sucks dirty monkey banana, and I didn't think that was fair at all, but I kind of see her point.  What do you think?"

13.  "My friends, who know I love Prog so much, all say only sissies listen to Prog?" [author's note: maybe you're the only prog fan they know and they assume all prog fans are like you].

14. "So-and-so is the best band ever!"

15. "So-and-so is the worst band ever!"

16. "Why does {insert musician here} make me feel so funny in my pants?"

I am pretty new here, but 90% of what´s been mentioned in this thread I´ve seen countless of times...
Maybe the peeps who have been here since Napoleon bought his first x-box are running out of ideas, or maybe we are all the same listeners with tiny minuscule differences - all of us rehashing the same questions involving our beloved music?
Naaaa - maybe it´s just time to incorporate other stuff like: Which kind of fruit do you enjoy whilst listening to Aranis? (Well, that´s a no-brainer of course. Pineapple)
Whatever to put on to an outdoors gig in February played in northern Russia featuring the newly formed Beach Boys Fantomas band?

Everything here is pretty much what I was thinking.

How about the administrators and moderators begin to enforce rules against making these threads for a certain amount of time and see how much original content begins to spawn?

EDIT: No more threads about Genesis either.  They're terrible.

Many of the threads on the subject matter of differences in musical quality, innovators, all the ramifications of the prog music world business and fan based beliefs on their heroes. When a younger progger posts a thread like this, it is the only time I can truly enjoy myself and it's quite entertaining and amusing as well. It can be quite educational to hear all these ancient proggers and younger proggers rise together with various opinions and analogies. I am very much a mixed bag regarding music as a whole so for me it's quite like enlightment for me. Some people on P.A. feel tired and bored with threads such as this. If there is any of what we call today trolling in these types of threads it brings excitement and interest to the viewer and people here seem to have an understanding of communication and that makes it worthwhile.

Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to delete threads or lock them, but you may notice that many times the second post is a post from me that says "This has been done before, please check out these threads xxxxxxx and xxxxxx."   And yet, after I post that, the new thread still goes on for 3, 4 or 20 pages.

On the other hand, I think we need more threads about marmosets.

Posted By: jplanet
Date Posted: December 16 2009 at 12:45
Great, let's make new members so nervous about posting that we only hear from the same old members over and over again.

What do you expect new members to do, read every single thread ever started on the site before they post anything? It seems like people get annoyed far too easily. A symptom of being on the internet too much is when the frustrations of daily life start to get taken out on anonymous strangers online. If someone starts a thread that does not interest you, or even annoys you, guess what? You don't have to read it! Start a discussion that interests you.

It's like going to a party, sticking your nose in other people's conversations, and then getting annoyed if it doesn't interest you.

Here's a guideline for newbies: ignore the bitter and cynical old farts, talk about music, share, learn, and enjoy yourselves.

Let anyone start any thread they wish.

It's the internet,as long as knowone breaks PA rules.Just put up with it.Newbies may find it fun to talk about this stuff.

I'm more bored of reading senior members telling newbies their thread sucks then the threads themselves. If it's a bad thread, let it die on it's own.You can't restrict  discussions because you find them boring.

I've been thinking we could have a "PA Rejects" category for rejected artists/bands. (and perhaps one for those that were just unaccepted over a long time called "Lost in the Shuffle").  That would be fun.  It could even have subcategories such as "Shockingly unprog", "Most Laughable Suggestions", "Kinda Prog" (but not Prog enough in our opinion), "Bounce" for those that got bounced around teams but were ultimately dismissed", and "Limbo Prog" (agreed it was Prog but couldn't reach a consensus on which sub-genre it would best fit) and  "WTF is this?"

No, but they can go search the forum's archives for old discussions which might contain the information they're looking for. This isn't one of those forums where a thread gets deleted after a couple of months.

As for the question posed by the thread starter? I'd be more than happy to see a moratorium on threads whining about how progressive rock isn't as popular as it was in the early 1970s, and discussions of exactly what progressive rock is. Odds are high that'd result in the posting shrinking to a third of its current, but hey... quality above quantity, isn't that what they say?

I think asking a visitor to check out what has been discussed previously is a bit much. That's like walking into a big party and being told that before you start any conversation with anyone, find out what has been mentioned by whom and whether there is still anything left to say.
Unless,of course, someone is proposing to set up an easy to use user-friendly index referencing all subjects. The search function isn't always helpful , ex. who is better Bach Beethoven or Bachman Turner Overdrive ? vs is Bach better than Beethoven or even Bachman Turner Overdrive ? Or = why aren't BTO here ?

Yeah, I don't buy the b.s. about searching for threads before starting one. As debrewguy pointed out, they weren't involved in the old thread...the point is being in a discussion, and being in one that is current, not just making sure it's been discussed...the forum is a place to interact, there are plenty of areas of PA that are databases designed to store unique bits of data.

Any poll that does not have Frank Zappa as an option. Answering Frank Zappa on any prog related poll is like answering Jesus any time in Sunday school--even if it's not the answer they're looking for, no one can really tell you you're wrong.

Any thread suggesting Faith No More that gets shot down in two posts, especially if there are any comparisons to the Beastie Boys.

Any "polls" in the polls section that require you to actually answer rather than simply clicking on an option. Seriously, who has time to type out which one they prefer?

Wink

To go one further, and to answer the original poster's proposal at the same time: Here's an idea for a rule for new and old members alike:

How about stop insulting other members? This goes for their musical tastes, how they express it, what aspect of it they want to discuss, etc...There are far greater injustices in the world like hunger, bigotry, oppression, cruelty to animals and people, where frustrations can be justly placed in order to achieve something more worthwhile, rather than waste energy on scolding and belittling some prog fan eager for interaction in a community. I do know of at least two very good long-time members of PA who don't dare post here any more because of the condescending and insulting attitudes of many members.

You should only be repeating a discussion if you think you can add something new to it. You are not adding anything to new to a fantasy supergroup discussion by creating it again. Alternatively, you should resurrect the old thread about something, we don't lock old posts.

Quote 2. No Personal attacks (flaming or trolling). Keep it civil, show respect at all times for your fellow members. Disagreement, debate, even "heated" discussion is fine (though emoticons should be used to "soften" the effect of words). However, personally directed insults, denigration, etc. will not be tolerated, and will be grounds for warning and, if not stopped immediately, ejection. This applies equally to forum posts AND private messages. "Group-directed" insults and denigration (e.g., racism, sexism, ageism, etc.) also fall under this category, any such behavior will be taken on a case by case basis. Any member who engages in continuous baiting, borderline insults, or other continuously "aggressive" behaviour will be warned.

I agree that it is generally good forum etiquette to wake up an older thread, and maybe a gentle debriefing that the chosen topic has become something of a joke - when done in good humor and reminding the new member that they are welcome - rather than mocking, which tends to fly under the radar of the Rule #2 you pointed out...

Why dont women like prog? I mean, what is their major damage here? All they seem to want to do is dance, have fun and sleep with good looking interesting guys, who make them feel good about themselves! I just cant work them out. The other week my girlfriend dumped me after I arranged a surprise Mars Volta seminar for her, exploring the hidden meanings in all the endless horrible noise that makes up most of Frances the Mute.

I guess some people just dont understand...

All of the 'nu-prog'/'new prog'/'new sub-genre to force every post-1990 band together' threads are also pretty ridiculous. Not content wise, but I remember Dean posted the links to all of the threads in one of them, and there was like 11 or something ridiculous.

+ its a stupid idea.

Has anyone else ever wondered what Rush would have sounded like, if Emerson Lake & Palmer had written all the songs, and played all the instruments?

It keeps me awake at night, as does fretting over which of my favourite prog singers would best be able to survive in the jungle, armed only with a biro, and one Pot Noodle. This week, I think its Peter Hammill..

Really... and all of you are talking about how bad some threads are....

A thread where you only talk about other threads is always much worse and more useless than any other thread, even one of those "Genesis vs Yes" ones...

That is why if I see a thread that I don't feel like answering again, I don't.  The only time I've pulled the "be mean to newbies" card was that one thread that the OP posted in all caps, in which almost everyone who posted mocked the OP by posting in caps.

While I have my disagreements with the way this site is moderated, I would say that a lax attitude towards personal attacks. Perhaps the problem is with the two long time posters' reactions to things, not the things that are actually being said...

Honestly, I can't get upset about someone hassling a newbie a little bit. There are certain unwritten rules that govern every forum, and you lurk a little bit before you start posting so you don't look like an idiot. If you don't bother to do that, or you don't bother to follow even basic forum procedures like doing a simple search, then you deserve a little bit of "zest" in the responses to your thread.

Polls between a few really really really obscure bands that no-one has ever heard of. For example: etrtjefb, usygrsjdh and yfhbdfk-ytruieywb??!!, all from Kurdistan.

You're wrong, these bands are not from Kurdistan: Yfhddfk and Ytruieywb were from Iceland (even if Ytruieywb is Welsh for "improvisation").
Yfhddfk nearly made it to join the R.I.O. festivals, but their singer tragically died in a geyser incident in 1977, leading the survivors to become Ytrueywb.
Ytrueywb was the first rock band to tour in the North Pole. Alas, their boat was sinked by the Sovietic Marine: the music of this avant-garde band sounded like the motors of the US cruisers.

Etrtjefib was a short-lived Hungarian jazz-rock which turned zeuhl on their 2nd and last LP in 1977. Rumour has it the 9 musicians all left Hungary for a trip to Tibet and never returned, starving either on the K2, or on the Himalaya. Other people said they were abducted in the Caucasian mountains by aliens.

Usygurjdh is one of the few examples of Mongolian rock bands: strongly influenced by Pink Floyd, they seem to have recorded two cassettes in 1976 and 1977. Reports about half of the band turning berzerk and trying to invade China alone with swords and bows, riding horses, seem to be true. The other half of the band tried to invade Russia.

I agree. I think we should do what we do, and see that's it done, before thinking about doing something else we could that we're not doing.

Like 100 bands that you should know about. Followed by 100 bands that you have to know about. And finally 100 bands that you have no choice, you're going to know before you go find out what you want to in the first place.

Or , why do we let people who don't know about band X or genre Y review albums ? How dare they say they merit but 1 star !.
Or, we can't let this band / album / genre get 5 star ratings because people will rush out and buy / love it and miss out on this band / album / genre that I just gave a 5 star rating to

Whenever these threads are posted on a forum its because that forum is becoming stagnant so people dont have anything particularly great to talk about so they just post whatever derranged rantings come into their head after listening to King Crimson until 3am. If you got rid of those threads there wouldnt be any threads, not even this one. this may well have already been said in this thread but I wasnt going to read 5 pages of echos to make sure, oh the irony.
