I got a prize for imaculate grades last year (the universitary year, that is).

Going to the ceremony was awful, being forced to go after that to a party labelled 'cocktail" in the program only to offer snacks, cokes and beers was awful, but being cheered up by my choir ensemble (who came to sing Gaudeamus and later on carols), while the other winners, from the other colleges, received only shallow clappies, felt good.

Pat, do you understand why I might call Cheer-Accident generic avant-rock? Because I think I really upset Trouserpress. ;-)

Generic avant-rock?  Isn't that like an oxymoron?  I didn't think that avant-garde music had one "generic" sound.

Maybe they sound like other avant-rock bands, whish is very avant-garde really.

Some "avant-rock" bands can arguably not be avant-garde at all.

I guess if they are intentionally like other avant-garde bands they lose their avant-gardeness, I guess a lot of music could be like that, but then how do you classify it? It isn't avant-garde, but it isn't like "other" music.

No, being influenced by avant-garde masters or particular styles (but not coming with something original per se) would not mean they're not avant-garde.

What I meant to say is that some of the more experimental, unusual, hard to classify bands getting labeled "avant-rock" would not necessarily be avant-garde per se.

"Other" as a tag should not extend beyond being the third option on myspace accounts.

So would "avant-garde" be a genre of music? or an approach?

It would be a fancy word to say during a sword fight.

No...Cry

Quote avant-garde: any creative group active in the innovation and application of new concepts and techniques in a given field (especially in the arts)

I was going to say pretty much the same thing in the "LOLZ IS PROG COMPLEX" thread someone just started.

Uh...okay...so that's pretty much half the artists here (before 1989 of course).

Progressive rock is eclectic by definition.

That is why it is silly to worry about it, it's basically saying "Are we more elite than everyone else because we like 5 minute keyboard solos?"
