I may be extraordinarily crazy right now, but this is actually somewhat enjoyable. As enjoyable as noise art can possibly be, anyway.

Aren't you the same person that gave "Beginning: The Long March" by Henry Cow a 10/10?  Sorry, but I can't see how that's much different that noise art.  Maybe slightly more melodic, but still noisy.

Yep.

It's different in that it's not near as abrasive as Merzbow.

Merzbow? Abrasive? A bit of an understatement. One of the few artists that everyone in hearing range immediately hated when I introduced him.

I'm sure that's how my family would react.

My family didn't even like Sigur Ros. I mean seriously, Jonsi has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. How can you not enjoy listening to that?

My mom and brother hate nearly everything I listen to.

My family likes (or tolerates) most of the music I listen to.  My Mom sort of draws the line at RPI.  I think it's the vocals that sound foreign to her, but my family all really love Harmonium.

This is actually pretty neat. It's the first time I can say I honestly thoroughly enjoy this experience.

Same here. If it isn't on their favorites list it is immediately ignored. I should see how they react to Naked City.LOL

I'm listening to the same thing you are, out of curiosity. Tongue It's not as bad as I remember, in fact, I actually turned the volume up.

There's a HUGE difference between free improvisation and noise. Free improvisation is done on musical instruments, and if you're listening hard enough the sounds created more or less resemble notes. Noise is the use of non-musical instruments to create sound; for example, recording an amplified staple gun, or manipulating static with a computer. I did not understand the appeal of the second at all until I heard these pieces. But my enjoyment of those pieces seems to be unique, as I can't replicate it with any other true noise. I even tried part of John Wiese's new album because if Evan Parker thinks he's good enough to play with, he should be good enough for me, but still nothing.

You can't turn the volume up past a certain point though.

QFT

I haven't heard any of John Wiese's new album though.

Just enough to get the "Wall of Static" effect.

Of course.

I think the title track is my favorite.

It reminds me of Tangerine Dream, except more like Tangerine Nightmare.

I honestly can't see how anyone can enjoy Merzbow.  I think it's the perfect example of experimentation in excess.  After listening to "Beginning: The Long March" again, it's not as weird as when I heard it the first time, and I can see how it's much different that noise.

Well, like I said, I'm pretty much crazy.

He appealed to me more than most Merzbow, but it still didn't quite make it. I'm really curious what the top 2009 albums are going to be for I Hate Music people, they are too far out there for me but I find their taste fascinatin. A ton of them called Graham Lambkin's The Breadwinner a masterpiece, and I don't even understand why somebody would listen to it. It's not even aggressive like Merzbow, it's just a collage of a bunch of sounds from his apartment...

Personally, I can't consider anything produced by a musical instrument to be "noise", unless it's pure feedback, even if it can't be written down onto sheet music.

I'm faced with a choice: Henry Cow or Aphex Twin.

You must be.  Sorry to say, but what just sounds like a recording of computer-generated static just isn't my cup of tea.
