Matt, is Trans-Siberian Orchestra worth checking out or not?

They are certainly much different than anything Avant-Garde.

They are a three star band pretty much all around (although I only own one album, everything else I've heard is three-starish, give or take).

Expertly crafted though.

That's cool. I liked their cover of the Moonlight Sonata, Mvmt. 3, and they did a nice Bach piece that I forgot, and like I said, Carmina Burana, which is O Fortuna. I can't say that the album is a favorite of mine, but it has it's moments.

Well, it has Jon Olivia in it and he was in Savatage, who are a prog metal band. So if it's not full-blown prog, it's prog by association. LOL

IMHO(In my horrible opinion) I would say buy it. It is at least a 3, so it isn't bad, it's just not great.

I like Genesis more than TSO.

Well I like Genesis, but never as much as most people on this site. And I like some cheese metal/power metal. So maybe that's not the best comparison. Nevertheless, I'll at least check out that and the Beethoven one.

I listened to the samples and there's definitely some Savatage influence in them, among other things.

Savatage is actually one of my favorite metal bands ever. If you don't have their album "Streets: A Rock Opera", you're missing out on a lotWink

Their early stuff is pure heavy/power metal, but later on they incorporated some prog and symphonic metal leanings. Once Jon Oliva was no longer the vocalist and was replaced by Zac Stevens, their music was almost complete symphonic metal with little hair metal leanings.

Well, there's your history lesson. There will be a quiz tomorrow to see what you've learnedTongueBig smile
