You talk about guilty pleasures; my favorite female artist was Nelly Furtado, based solely on the debut. Which is why I hated the latest one so much. Or, as a friend of mine said, "Of you liked the debut and hated her latest album. The first one was a jazz, trip hop, folk, pop album, and the latest one was something people listen to." |

Red Hot Chili Peppers get mentioned alot. One of the first non-prog bands I checked out but it never got further than that.
Only one mentioning of Pearl Jam. I like most of what I hear on the radio, but where to start with them, it seems their discography is huge.
I had high expectations of Queens of the Stone Age, but when I eventually heard one of their (few?) albums (an anniversary album of some sort) I was quite disappointed.
You got me interested in Fiona Apple. I'll try to find her debut.
The Pixies get praised alot in the press. Another band to check out I guess.
Deftones, Faith No More, Offspring, Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers. I will keep those in mind.
Never heard of Plainview's suggestions (Paper Chase, At The Drive In, A Place to Bury Stranger), but they puzzled me enough to go try and seek out.
And now I'll go and get that free download of NIN's latest.

The NIN album gets better on the last tracks... don't quit it after the first ones!
The Pixies also have a free download, four nice songs from a concert this autumn: http://www.pixiesmusic.com/splash.html It's nothing spectacular but it does make me want to check them out. Here's a taste of Fiona Apple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAPLta7sYr8 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I75_jdbPOZ4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gLWTtlMwo4 (beware it's pop not rock). At The Drive In is the hardcore band which led to the formation of The Mars Volta. |

Upon downloading NIN's "Ghosts I" for free I realized that this is not their latest. But I am pleasantly surprised with Ghosts. Now found "The Slip" for free downloading.

As far as Fiona samples, those are some poppier ones: Look instead for samples of Pale September, Sullen Girl, Slow Like Honey, The Child is Gone, Carrion. Some of these tracks will give you the jazzier element which best showcases her voice and piano.

I have the entire Ghosts (hard copy, though I tried the free tracks before I bought). It's not your standard NIN, profanity free as there are no vocals.

Definitely The Arctic Monkeys. Very British band so I don't know whether you non-British folk would get a lot of the lyrical content, but the music is still great. By far the greatest Indie Rock band.

I'm a huge NIN fanboy as many people here probably know and I can really not reccomend them enough. The Downward Spiral and The Fragile are two of my favorite albums of all time.
You'll notice a lot of people mentioned them, it's for a reason. I hesitate to say them because really it's a project of Trent Reznor but it's whatever then.

Great post. That album and Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes are probably my two favorite "female singer/songwriter" albums. |
