As the complete prog rock nerd, I would like to expand my knowledge on "modern rock", modern in my terms bring 90's and beyond.

The listed artists have attracted my attention along the way, but I'm not sure which way to turn. I "kind of" like Audioslave and Nine Inch Nails but should I pass my attention on to other "interesting artists for the prog, rock ignorant enthusiast"?

Definitely Soundgarden.

Don't really like Korn much, nor Staind and Audioslave is not bad but nothing amazing.
AiC and Rage Against The Machine are my 2 favorites of this list, but if I could only choose one, it has to RATM.
Tom Morello has had a massive influence on my approach to playing guitar and the band in general just produced nothing other than killer songs with no filler IMO.

Alice In Chains. Their new album is not bad at all, what confirms they still are important!

Pumpkins made 2 good albums.

Rage made one good album, about 4 times.

But I'll vote for Pixies, or Red Hot Chili Peppers personally.  For 90s era women, check out Fiona Apple's debut.  Recorded when she was VERY young, the material is surprisingly good.

@Finn: wow, I wouldn't have expected to find another Fionna fan here. I was in love with her about 10 years ago (seriously), she embodied my ideal woman. Tongue

I voted Rage Against The Machine just above Smashing Pumpkins. From NIN I've only heard their last album (which can be downloaded for free) once and it was interesting. Seems like I've missed a great band? All my friends with good and wide tastes are heavy into NIN. Some of what I've heard on that album is quite experimental and progressive (but not resembling prog by no means).

Later albums may have drifted to more conventional stuff, but that debut was just fantastic.  The long drawn out piano and that voice, the crisp production, stuff like Pale September.....oh man.

Even though I rate NIN very highly, (especially Downward Spiral and Fragile) I felt compelled to punch the "Other" button and cast a vote for The Manic Street Preachers for their first four albums.

If I had to pick from this list, it would be the Pumpkins. There are a lot of "modern rock" bands that are better though, but I'm not really sure if you're looking at all of modern rock or just the mainstream alternative kind of rock bands.

Soundgarden of course - Badmototfinger and Superunknown are some of the gratest albums of the 90s imagine albums with 14 tracks and no filler (so as I see it ) just a creative bunch

I have to check out more Smashing Pumpkin ( I realy love their two Batman & Robin film songs) (which is probably the only good thing about the 4th Batman movie - The End is the Beginning the End & The Beginning is the End the Beginning
Audioslave is cool, RATM is cool and I like Red Hot Chili Peppar and NIN

but also Deftones, Fatih No More, some Offspring and Prodigy

Agreed.

Just look at these tracks, all written by her from age 15-18 or so.  Not a clunker in the bunch, though some people might be sick of the singles.  I had 3rd row seats to her first visit to Mpls, and sitting a few yards away as she did "Never is a Promise" and "Pale September" is one of my fondest concert memories upon hundreds of shows.

Anyone who hasn't heard this album may wish to check it out.  It's a classic.

Tidal

  1. "Sleep to Dream" – 4:08
  2. "Sullen Girl" – 3:53
  3. "Shadowboxer" – 5:24
  4. "Criminal" – 5:41
  5. "Slow Like Honey" – 5:56
  6. "The First Taste" – 4:46
  7. "Never Is a Promise" – 5:54
  8. "The Child Is Gone" – 4:14
  9. "Pale September" – 5:50
  10. "Carrion" – 5:43

Hmm...of this list, I would probably say Incubus (who verge on the psychedelic anyways), but as I've always noticed, I unconsciously drift towards artists that are art rocky...a puzzle! I shall have to think of an other.

(That said, what little of NIN I've heard has yet to let me down, so, kudos there I suppose.)

You talk about guilty pleasures; my favorite female artist was Nelly Furtado, based solely on the debut. Which is why I hated the latest one so much.

Or, as a friend of mine said, "Of you liked the debut and hated her latest album. The first one was a jazz, trip hop, folk, pop album, and the latest one was something people listen to."

Red Hot Chili Peppers get mentioned alot. One of the first non-prog bands I checked out but it never got further than that.

Only one mentioning of Pearl Jam. I like most of what I hear on the radio, but where to start with them, it seems their discography is huge.

I had high expectations of Queens of the Stone Age, but when I eventually heard one of their (few?) albums (an anniversary album of some sort) I was quite disappointed.

You got me interested in Fiona Apple. I'll try to find her debut.

The Pixies get praised alot in the press. Another band to check out I guess.

Deftones, Faith No More, Offspring, Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers. I will keep those in mind.

Never heard of Plainview's suggestions (Paper Chase, At The Drive In, A Place to Bury Stranger), but they puzzled me enough to go try and seek out.

And now I'll go and get that free download of NIN's latest.

The NIN album gets better on the last tracks... don't quit it after the first ones!

The Pixies also have a free download, four nice songs from a concert this autumn:  http://www.pixiesmusic.com/splash.html - http://www.pixiesmusic.com/splash.html It's nothing spectacular but it does make me want to check them out.

Here's a taste of Fiona Apple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAPLta7sYr8 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAPLta7sYr8

and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gLWTtlMwo4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gLWTtlMwo4

(beware it's pop not rock).

At The Drive In is the hardcore band which led to the formation of The Mars Volta.

As far as Fiona samples, those are some poppier ones:  Look instead for samples of Pale September, Sullen Girl, Slow Like Honey, The Child is Gone, Carrion.   Some of these tracks will give you the jazzier element which best showcases her voice and piano.

You'll notice a lot of people mentioned them, it's for a reason. I hesitate to say them because really it's a project of Trent Reznor but it's whatever then.

My knowledge of Nine Inch Nails is limited to Ghosts I and Things Falling Apart (for some reason I didn't succeed in dowloading the Slip), nonetheless I'm wondering if they wouldn't fit in PA's Prog Related section. Sure it must have been suggested before?

Edit: They were suggested for inclusion a year ago by a newbie who apparently got scared (first and only post) away by the responses. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=53003&KW=Nine+inch+nails&PID=3020306#3020306 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=53003&KW=Nine+inch+nails&PID=3020306#3020306

Pearl Jam for sure... Someone ask for where to start with them, I say Vs, Ten or Yield are their best stuff...

This is turning into a Fionna Apple's thread right...??? I like a lot more Tori Amos... Little Earthquakes is a great album... but Fionna is fine as well... have a couple of albums somewhere but she doesn't keep my atention too much...

1. Red Hot Chili peppers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Soundgarden
3. Alice in Chains
4. Temple of the Dog
5. Pearl Jam
6. Stone Temple Pilots
7. Faith no More
8. Nirvana
9. Mudhoney

But the best band to start with if you're new to non-prog (LOL) is probably Soundgarden, since they use odd time signatures and tunings at times, aswell as "cryptic" lyrics.
All the bands i mentioned are great, though! Big smile

Out of the list Soundgarden. They were simply an incredible band and Chris Cornell's voice could peel paint off of a wall.

I am not surprised that no one has mentioned Silverchair, but I have to give them some props. While a bit crude,I liked their first album when it came out,and thought Freakshow was a big improvement. For being so young they were very mature musically. If they had continued in the vein of their first two albums I would have wrote them off,but they radically changed their sound on their next 3 albums.Daniel Johns' singing/lyric & songwriting really improved, and his string arrangements are superb.I consider their 2002 album "Diorama" damn near a masterpiece.

Thanks, all you respondees.

Looks like Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails are very appreciated by PA members. In fact sevral hundred times more than other bandsLOL

Anyway, someone said my definition was very limited. That's funny because I never defined "modern rock", but yes I only mentioned artists that get played on a socalled "modern rock radio". However, were I to define "modern rock" I would probably, say any rock post-Nirvana-Nevermind. Typical me, almost 20 years after it's release I am able to appreciate that album for what it is: just plain great. Wonder how you define "modern rock"?

Apparently "modern rock" only applies to US bands?! I'm surprised so few UK (or non-US) artists were highlighted by you. I guess you feel like me that the best rock apparently comes from the US. Come on, only two UK bands mentioned! Are you serious?

During the past week I have really come to love Nine Inch Nails! What a great band. Almost prog to my ears. Followed by Silverchair's unique mix of Beatlesque rock and string orchestra and Smashing Pumpkins. Then my initial fancy, Audioslave, and I now understand why: too my ears very 70's sounding like I love it.

I don't know which band that follows. Could be Rage Against The Machine (admittedly they got something unique that I like) Korn or Soundgarden. I wish I could support all those of you that voted the latter the best artist, but I can't. Incubus could also grow on me over time.

Have voted "Other".  Don't know if I can quite call it ROCK, but Grace by miles and miles and miles.  The marvellous voice of Jeff Buckley defeats other considerations easily for me. Definitely my favourite 90s and onwards album across genres.  From the list, would have chosen Soundgarden.

Smashing Pumpkins fan here, a band I consider definitely as prog-related. Mellon Collie is just amazing, just as Adore or Siamese Dream.

Just listen to these epics and come back !

Starla (Pisces Iscariot)
Thru the eyes of ruby (Mellon Collie...)
Porcelina of the vast oceans (Mellon Collie...)
XYU (Mellon Collie...)
Glass & the ghost children (Machina...)

I am really surprised this band is not yet in the archives !

I'm tossing up between Alice In Chains and Soundgarden from this list. As much as a proghead I am, I enjoy other kinds of rock and metal as well. The only band from the big four of grunge (AIC, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam) I haven't got into yet is Pearl Jam. I don't dislike 'em, just haven't really heard enough of them to form an opinion yet.

I quite like the Pumpkins, Incubus, and RATM. Audioslave are OK but nothing new, really. Cornell still sounds great as always, though. Still need to hear NIN properly. What album should I check out? Downward Spiral is one I hear good things about.

The Chilli Peppers are pretty good. I have one Korn album (Issues) which is not bad.

I'm still deciding between AIC and Soundgarden. Both sound a lot like one of my favourite bands (Black Sabbath), have great vocalists (in AIC's case, both Layne Staley and the new guy William DuVall), and guitarists. And the new AIC album is very good, a lot better than I was expecting.

I'll go for AIC. But Soundgarden is close behind.

Also, is the new Dave Grohl/Josh Homme/John Paul Jones supergroup (Them Crooked Vultures) any good?

Oooh, good choice. I really admire Jeff Buckley's work as well. He's not prog, but his voice has the same quality as a Thom Yorke, Steve Wilson, or Matt Bellamy.

The Smashing Pumpkins are unfathomably more interesting than anyone else on this list.
