I just got this weird idea about selling my thrash-, prog- & power metal albums, and instead indulge in classic rock, hard rock, grunge, prog & jazz(fusion). It would feel like "cleaning up" my collection... But what if i get in a metal mood?

Yes, never sell albums, you might want to buy them back at some point.
It would get me a fair bit of money to spend on other CD's I'm a bit unsure... I've already sold some of my Death albums (that i barely played anyway) and i don't regret that. Hm... I've moved them to the bottom shelf of my collection while i think this over.
